Ih VAltVtfr 950 Retrospection Thirty-seven years ago, in 1913, The Burro greeted the students of the Mineral Wells High School for the first time. In reviewing the page of greeting of that first edition, The 1950 Burro Staff was thrilled and inspired to learn that the initial aims in their simplicity and sincerity embodied all that any staff could hope to attain. Then, as now, The Burro was never meant to be a work of priceless art. While we are proud of the opportunity of having a part in your hopes of greeting of that first edition, The 1950 Burro Staff making his physical appearance a little more beauti- ful, we shall cherish forever those grass roots that were planted so deeply in conveying an idea of high school life and loyal spirit of the dear old school days. If The Burro continues to shed a happy glow over your reminiscences, then what aim is more worthy? THE BURRO STAFF OF 1913 WE SALUTE YOU Zhc Donkey When fishes flew and forests walked And figs grew upon thorn, Some moment when the moon was blood Then surely I was born. With monstrous head and sickening cry And ears like errant wings, The devil's walking parody On all four-footed things. The tattered outlaw of the earth, Of ancient crooked will; Starve, sco.urge, deride me: I am dumb, I keep my secret still. Fools, for I also had my hour; One far fierce hour and sweet; There was a shout about my ears, And palms before my feet. Gilbert Keith Chesterton Atfeca. 'P?r teft A, Atntn. The local merchants and businessmen have been a constant intellectual stimulus to us as they handed down a stable code of ethics and a worthy pattern of social behavior. They have set an enviable record in their achievements; for their support and all their accomplishments we are grateful. The Burro Staff President O. H. GRANTHAM Vice-President L. C. Starters ran up nineteen quick points and gave the game to reserves, who scored one touchdown. Mineral Wells 19 Stephenville 27 The Mountaineers lost another high scoring thriller when the Jackets came from behind three times to win. This game depended on the breaks. Mineral Wells 0 Breckenridge 35 Breckenridge hung a one-sided defeat on the Moun- taineers, clinching the district title. The Mountaineers hustled but could not seem to get going. Mineral Wells 14 Weatherford 33 The Kangaroos beat the Mountaineers in the third high scoring game of the year. Our team gave with all they had: the Kangaroos, fired up after three consecu- tive defeats by the Mountaineers, managed to outscore our team. 2 year letterman BILL HARRELL End BILL SIMMS Tackle 2 year letterman MARTIN PATTERSON Back 2 year le+terman JAMES ELLISTON Back I year let+erman MELVIN BALDRIDGE Back I year letterman LEON SMITH Tackle 2 year le+terman BOB KINCAID Center I year letterman JOE RAY ERWIN Tackle I year letterman JACK COSBY End I year letterman JAMES BROOM Tackle I year letterman ALLEN RAY QUEEN End I year letterman JOHN ALLEN BAUM Center I year letterman RONALD BOND Back I year letterman C. Jidd and Zrack The track team entered three meets before the district meet this year. They were the Southwest Exposi- tion Meet, Possum Kingdom Relay, and a Three-Way meet with Weatherford and Oisco. In the Southwest meet Gandee qualified for the finals but did not run. The showing in the Possum Kingdom Relay was much better. Gandee set a new record for the mile, 4 minutes, 52.9 seconds, and Keller won fourth in the shot. The Three-Way meet with Weatherford and Cisco was close. Keller was first in the shot and second in the discus; Alexander was first in pole vault; Gandee was first in mile; Flores, first in 880; Hall and Owens, first and second in pole vault. We won enough other events to give us 53 points to Weatherford's 62 1 2 and Cisco's 3 I. In the district meet the team won second in shot and discus, first in mile, 880, pole vault, high jump, third in high jump, and fourth in mile relay. Keller, Gandee, and Flores went to regional where Keller was first in shot; Gandee was third in mile; Flores was fourth in the 880. At the state meet Keller was fifth in the discus at 132 feet, 5 1 2 inches, and eighth in shot at 45 feet.
