- ' Commander J. S. Shilson Operations Officer Atlantic Mine Force James Starr Shilson, Commander, U. S. Navy, was born in Norfolk, Virginia on 22 May, 191 0 to James Shilson and the former Sarah H. Edmonds. CDR Shilson attended the Swavely Preparatory School, Manassas, Virginia; Maury High School, Norfolk, Virginia; and the University of Virginia, class of 1931. His later schooling -was obtained at the Naval Academy where he -was commissioned Ensign in May, 1934 and here he also obtained his B.S. de- gree. His M.S. degree was later obtained at Massa- chusetts Institute of Technology. At Long Beach, California, on 12 June, 1936 CDR Shilson married Shirley Virginia Webster of San Francisco, California. To them have been born Shirley Starr Shilson, on 28 March, 1937 and James Shilson II, on 6 January, 1953. He is a member of National Sojourner Society, Shrine Organization, 32-degree Mason, Phi Delta Theta and American Meteorology Society. A brief biography of his Naval career follows. CDR Shilson served on battleships, cruisers and destroyers and attended post-graduate instructor school in meteorology prior to World War II. Dur- ing the first year of this war he was on carrier Enterprise and after a short time of duty in Pearl Harbor, he joined the staff of Commander, Central Pacific, Adm. Hoover. In the summer of 1944 CDR Shilson returned to the U. S. A. for duty as X. O. and OinC of Fleet Weather Central in NorVa. In January, 1946 he joined ComNavPhil Staff in Manila, then in July of 1947 he was assigned to CNO as operations officer of Naval Aerological Service. In May, 1949 he took command of Shannon (DM-25) and served in that capacity for 27 months. He is now As- sistant Chief of Staff for Operations, Staff, COM- INLANT. CDR Shilson is entitled to wear Pacific cam- paigns ribbons with nine battle stars and Unit Citation Medal.
