Rae Arlene Wheeler Treasurer . . , Betty Fletcher Advisers Miss Blanche Ivfellingei' and Miss Winifred Thom: Schools as well as ideals and industries have felt the effect of the present worldewide conflict. ln Milwaukie Union I-figh School the Iunior class has undertaken to lead the school in defense measures. Some time ago a Iunior Defense Council, composed of twelve Iuniors and their advisers, was established to carry on numerous drives and ways of informing the students in the interest of defense, Some of the Councils more outstanding accomplishments have been the registration of all stu- dents for summer defense work in cooperation with the government, the sale of defense stamps, and the signing of defense stamp pledges, and the production of a number of outstanding patriotic assemblies, The Council also cooperated with the FFA. boys in their paper drive and with the lunior Red Cross for wool and yarn. lt is hoped that this council will be carried on again next year by the succeeding lunior class. ln all other ways -in sports and extracurricular activi, ties the members of the l91ilfff2 lunior class have ac' tively participated.

Mr. Iohn Sutherland The opening of school found the Sophomore class large in numbers and full of enthusiasm. Football had a good turnout from this class, three membersfGene Downs, Rlmer Cress, and Chuck Parker- f-earned their varsity Baseball followed football with three Sophomore -Don Seamster, Bob High, and Dick Oberstallerfearning lets ters. lvlany Sophomores filled lunior squad positions. Racing the boys in school-spirit, the girls won the tournaf ments in soccer, but lost to the boys' All-Star team. Tillie Cross and Carol lones represented the class in tennis, Lee Lucas did the unusualeea Sophomore winning the State Championship in wrestling. La Verne Perry and Bret Kelly also did well. ln baseball a host of Sophomores turned out. Oberstaller was a regular pitcher and High worked at first base. Tolstead and Swales acted as man- ager and assistant manager, respectively. As for cross country, Sophomore Don Lorenz won the State Cham- pionship in the lunior section of the Hill State Relay. The prize a turkey. Track brought forth the following Sopho- mores: Cress, Carmella, Downs, Driesner, Lorenz, Perry, Piper, Schmit, Tappendorf, and Flint as manager. ln the social register, the Sophomores arranged and carried out the Cotton Cord Dance which is a Sophof more tradition. ln dramatics, we presented the winning tournament play. Best actor was Bruce CBettyJ Ecklund. The Honor Scholastic Roll was reserved for only two Sophomores: Norma Atwood and Roland Zahler. ln the Student Body affairs, the Sophomores were proud of Pat Gibbs, Student Body secretary, lvlr. Sutherland acted as class adviser.
