SENIOR CLASS PLAY TONS OF MONEY By Will Evans and Valentine The dramatic season was inaugurated on Ianuary 20 and 21, when the Senior Class presented the three-act English farce, Tons of Money. This was the first time in the history of the school that a play had been presented two nights by the same cast. There was never a dull moment, as the audience watched the characters dip deeper into the very complicated and hilarious plot of bills, inheritances, and mistaken identity. The cast, headed by Tom Metcalf and Betty Iane Steres, gave a very talented and polished performance. CAST Sprules, the butler. ......,,,.,,. ,,...,.,.. A thol Lydon Simpson, the maid . . . . Although this was his first year as head coach, he has made progress in forming better ball teams: and this strength was needed to combat the teams of the No Name League, one of the strongest in the state. THOMAS SWANSON In his first year as assistant coach at Milwaukie, Mr. Swanson has helped to es- tablish a high standing in sports of which all Milwaukie is proud. He is a gradu- ate of Oregon State College, where he was an outstanding iootball player. This year he has given splendid training in football and track. It was his constant work, that of Mr. McKeel, and that ot the boys, to which we may attribute our win- ning the No Name championship in football. First Row-Coach Merrit McKeel, lake Risley, lngvard Boe, Linfred Richardson, Floyd Taylor, Bill Bradshaw, Ben Iones, Gene Foidel, Richard Burns, Bud Butcher, Coach Swanson. Second Bow-Bud Short, Daniel Ramsey, Iohn Howell, Edward Frossard, Terry Metcalf, Clement Meeks, Frank Bushman, Gor- don Hoy, Bob Van Osdel. Third Row+Sydney Hall, Iaclc Falkner, Bob Landstrom, Alfred Spor, Enrico Penna, Dick Burger Ward Soules, Alvin Bischoff. Fourth How-Manager Owen Bauserman, Iames Sherwood, Lester Iensen, Manager lames Schuld, Bernard Sturdevant. VARSITY FOOTBALL This year proved to be a very successful one for the Milwaukie Maroons. The football team, captained by Bill Bradshaw', showed its unequaled strength by winning six out of seven games and thereby capturing the title of First Champions of the No Name League, the only loss being with the Salem Vikings which ended in a 20 to 19 defeat for the Maroons due mainly to the team's loss of Boe and Penna through injuries. The greatest game of the season was when Milwaukie's historic rival, Oregon City, was slapped down to a 7 to 0 defeat. Although the Maroons were rated as heavy favorites in this game, it proved to be by no means a cinch. In the other four games Milwaukie defeated Eugene 13 to 6, Corvallis 45 to 0, Tillamook 19 to 7, and McMinnville 29 to 6, ending the season with 132 points to the opponents' 39. In three non-league contests Milwaukie beat Gresham and Rainier and lost to Pacific Frosh. The big event of the season was the Milwaukie-Iefferson game on Thanksgiving Day. The fans who saw this game saw plenty of thrills when the outweighed Maroons ran the ball back 15 to 25 yards at a time. but could not puncture the heavy forward of the Ieff team to score. Nevertheless, the Maroons definitely outplayed the big Ieff team, making 230 yards and 14 first downs to Ieff's 160 yards and 9 first downs. Ieff scored early in the first quarter by an intercepted pass. and again in the third quarter on a run from the 15-yard line. The game ended 14 to 0 for Ieff. Prospects for next year look very bright. The same backfield will be back and practically the same line, so the Maroons have a very good chance to win the championship again. Third Row-Bob Van Osdel, Chuck Sperr, Rolph Cooper, Vernon Lorenz, Stanley Whipple, King Martin, Marlin Clark, lim Corrigan. JUNIOR FOGTBALL This year under the coaching of Mr. McNulty the Maroon Babes experienced only a fair season. Though poor at first, they showed great promise toward the end oi the season and played like veterans. What they lacked in size and weight they made up in speed and showed plenty of fight. Beaten twice at the first of the season. They came back to defeat Benson Tech once and Canby twice. There were many players showing much promise of helping up the varsity of next season. First Row-Owen Bauserman, Richard Burns, Linfred Richardson, Gilbert Howe, lack Eggiman, lohn Ieffries, Edward Lind Second Row-Coach Merrit McKeel, Iames Sherwood, Floyd Bcity, Verner Anderson, Kay Ellefson, lake Risley, Stanley Whipple VARSITY BASKETBALL This year's basketball team captained by Toots Howe won five of the league games. The first five were: Dick Burns, lack Eggiman. Iohn Iefferies, Lin Richardson. and Floyd Baty. Lin Richardson was high point man with 135 points. Eggiman had ll2 and Burns 94. Baty had 49 while Ieffries. who played only a half a year, had 29. This team was exceptionally small. This, we contend. explains the game scores. The average was 5 feet 8 inches. Nevertheless. they made up for the lack of height in speed. endurance, and passing ability. The first string were all last year basket- ball lettermen. The Maroons finished fourth this year on the first season of the No Name League. Milwaukie McMinnville Milwaukie Oregon City Milwaukie Salem .,... Milwaukie Eugene .... Milwaukie Corvallis .. JUNIOR BASKETBALL Technically Iunior Basketball went out this year upon Milwaukie's entering the No Name League. For, instead of having a Iunior squad. a second team or B squad was established. Under this setup juniors and seniors were also eligible to play. This year's B squad was very green at the start ot the season. but, because of their great height and backed up by their speed, they improved greatly and showed great prospect for next year. Boys expected to move up to the varsity next year are Sturdevant, Ecklund, Terry Metcalf, and Iupe Anderson. First Row-Arthur Gustafson, Iohn lefferies, lack Eggiman, Linlred Richardson, Gordon Carney, Gene Foidel, Dick Burns, Edward Frossard, Paul Peters. Second Row-Harry Bassnett, lohn Pickle, Daniel Ramsey, Ralph Greathouse, Bradtord Ecklund, larnes Greathouse, Robert Skoglund, Thrrd How-Coach Merrit Mclfeel, Manager Bud Bassett, BASEBALL This year with the return of seven lettermen, everybody looked forward to a successful baseball season. They were not disappointed, for the Maroon nine won many games. They played many of the Portland high schools, winning from Grant, Commerce, and Franklin, and losing to Iefferson and Lincoln. All units of the team were strong. The pitching end was held up by Carney, Skoglund, and Bassnet, with Arthur Gustafson and Iohn Mize catching. Outstanding in the infield was Iohn Ieffries and Eggirnan. The outfield consisted of Burns, Ecklund, and Richardson, all good heavy hitters. Next year baseball prospects are not very bright, for there are only two returning lettermen. However, there are always plenty of boys who come up to fill vacant positions. First Row-lohn Carlson, Marion Eclcly, Louis S1mpson, lake Risley, Bud Ackerson, Steve Fassatti, Ingvard Boe, Dale Cook, Dan Nosler, James Sherwood, Bud Butcher, Stan Whipple. Second Row-Dave DeWelt, Elden Ulrich, Herman Cwumbert, Cole Rivers, Dalton Brown, lake Kooyman, Leslie Peake, Allen Coleman, Floyd Taylor, Alvin Bischoff, Iames Schuld, Third Row-Robert Yoshitomi, Warren Crosby, Lloyd Brewer, Enrico Penna, Coach Swanson, Donald Garber, Iohn Howell, Owen Bauserman, Sigmund Boe, Clifford Storms, lack lamisori, Donald Gardner, Walter Gillingham, Christopher Steres. TRACK Track, under the coaching of Mr. Swanson, again retained its standing as one of Milwaukie's most successful sports. Because Milwaukie was given its first defeat in a dual meet with Salem, the squad tried harder to become stronger. Building the team around Inky Boe in the dashes and Bud Ackerson and Steve Fossatti in the high jump and pole vault, respectively, they had another great season. At the Hill relays the Maroon's sprint medley, consisting of Boe, Cook, Kookman, and Peake, won first in its division. This year sure point winners were Warren Crosby in the weights Ca boy showing much promisel. Peake in the hall mile, Boe, Simpson, and Cook in the sprints, and Hoskins in the broad jump. There are many returning lettermen for next year's track team, and it looks like another successful season. However, Ackerson. Fossatti, Simpson. Crosby, Kookman, Risley, and many others will be greatly missed. ' First Row-Cole Rivers, Burton Gravelle, lohn Howell, Leslie Peake, Allen Coleman, Gordon Carney. Second How-Iohn Carlson, llermon Gumbert, lake Kaoyman, Bill Stenet, Donald Garber, Thomas Metcalf, lvan Ulrich, Mr Lange, Coach. CROSS COUNTRY Because ot an unusually late start. this year's cross-country team turned out a little under par. This, however, was certainly not due to the lack in quality of men. There were two returning lettermen, Howell and Coleman, and eight other good men who finished the season with flying colors. The Maroons did very well in dual and triple meets, but they didn't turn out as well in the annual Hill meet as they have done before. The men who made letters this year were Captain Howell, Coleman, Rivers, Peake. Stennet, Gravelle, Garber, Ulrich. and Gumbert. First Row-Wayne Deardorll, Louis Simpson, Michael Burke, Norman Iensen, Ward Soules, Warren Scott. Second Row-Hilton Clunis, Arthur Gustafson, Dick Iamison, Dale Bernard, Glenn Conyers, Nilo Untinen. First Row-Bill Strange, Garett Soules, Sam Sasaki, lim Grazeil, Adelmo Asti, Lloyd Iohnson, Sam Helser. Second Row-Bob Russell, Iohn Carlson, Lester Iensen, Marion Eckly, Roymand Haverlick, Clem Meeks, Merl Deardorfi, Fred Harrison. Third Row-Bob Burger, Dick Mclntyre, lack Iamison, Bud Butcher, Carl Burgard, Bud Hanley, Roger Dennis. BOXING This year's boxing team walked off with high honors. Dick Iamison and Norman Iensen received state amateur boxing championships. Warren Scott received a state novice championship. The team won victories over Oregon City, Salem and Albany. Other boys showing good form were Louis Simpson, Ward Soules, Mickey Burke, Arthur Gustafson and Nilo Untinen. The instructor this year was Charles Howe, an alumnus of Milwaukie. WRESTLING The victories of the wrestling team were few, but whether victorious or not they showed great spirit. They won meets with Albany and Salem. Those outstanding on the team were Bob and Dick Burger. Bud Butcher, Lester Iensen, Cole Rivers and lack Iamison. Fred Harrison was the wrestling coach this year, and he has built up a strong team to start out next year as all the boys will return. First Row-Trudy Weiss, Grace Powell, lune Postal, Bonnie Brzmlolett, Miss Wyman, Frances Nelson, Frances Loop, Marjorie Byrd, Olga Bubenick, Second Row-Dorothy Coykendall, Marjorie Iones, Sally Twohy, loan Burnett, Mary Walters. GIRLS' SOCCER After a very successful season with fair weather all the way, the Sophomore girls' soccer team emerged victorious. Sally Twohy was captain. Freshman captains were Marion Herzog, La Veda Varley. Freshman Maroons: Dorothy Leach, Freshman Gold. Iunior captain was Venita Grace. The senior girls did not have a soccer team this year. Members of winning team: Frances Nelson, Bonnie Iean Bramblett, Dorothy Coykendall, Gracie Powell, Olga Bubenik, Mariorie Bird. GIRLS' BASKETBALL The building of a new gymnasium for Milwaukie Union High School is indeed a great asset. but it has hindered girls' sports. Because it was not completed in time for the girls' basketball teams to play off for the final championship: the title was given to the two teams reaching the finals. The Sophomore and Senior teams were awarded this title. The members of the Senior team included H. Landsverk, I. Cowell, D. Grizzell, H. Herzog, P. Smith, I. Van Blaricom, A. Bromblett, H. Nelson. S.
