CLASS OF 1946 HISTORY ln nineteen hundred and thirty-nine, Milton High School opened its doors to seventy boys and girls eager to learn the mysteries of high school life. We were the babies of the school but we surely didn't feel that way. ' We were divided into three rooms with Miss Hinerman, Mr. Cummings, and Mr. Throck- morton as sponsors. The officers for the year were: Mary Lou Hudgins, president: Patti Tibbets, vice-president, Mildred Turner, secretaryg and Dorothy Rowsey, treasurer. Beatrice Walden and Mary Lou Hudgins served on the Student Council and also attended the Citizenship Ceremonials in Huntington. The following year as eighth graders we were sponsored by Miss Hinerman and Mr. Cum- mings. Class officers were elected as follows: Mary Lou Hudgins, president, Eva Roberts, vice- president: Dorothy Rowsey, secretary, and Lillian Smith, treasurer. Students attending Citizenship Ceremonials that year were Elizabeth Meadows, Lillian Smith, Lucy Gatewood, Anna Mae Nichols, Richard Rowsey, Carl Foster, and Gene Howell. Our class was also represented in the band that year by Lewis Swann, Sam Harshbarger, Charles Jordan, David Blackwood, Dorothy Rowsey, Mary Lou Hudgins, Mary Diamond, and Dulcie Faye Thompson. , A basketball tournament between classes was held, and both the boys and girls of the eighth grade defeated the seventh grade. This year, students from Ona, Culloden, and other schools came in to make a total enrollment of one hundred and nine. Our sponsors for this year were Miss Rogers, Miss Grady, and Miss Gillespie. Class officers were elected: Jimmy Lute, president: Vernon Henry, vice-president: and Sam Harshbarger, secretary and treasurer. Charles Powell, Billy Williams, and Richard Rowsey were members of the football team. ,Billy Williams, lvan Williams, Avondale Bryan, James Hatfield, and Charles Burdette were members of the F. F. A. Sam Harshbarger, Floyd Stephens, Lewis Swann, Patti Tibbets, Mary Lou Hudgins, Wanda Lee Smith, Lena Gail Blackwood, Alma Young, Beatrice Walden, and Mildred Turner were members of the Glee Club which was organized this year. Maxine Morrison, Nora Black, Richard Rowsey, and Charles Murphy attended the Citizenship Ceremonial. The next year we again returned to school. This time, as Sophomores, our home room sponsors were Mrs. Sullivan, Mrs. Henderson and Miss Grady. Officers were elected by home rooms as follows: Room 204, Mary Lou Hudgins, president, Richard Rowsey, vice-president: Beatrice Walden, secretary and treasurer, Room 203, Sam Harshbarger, president, Lucy Gatewood, vice-president, and Vernon Henry, secretary and treasurer. Several members of our class participated in the Physical Education Demonstration held .fn the gym this year. Citizenship Ceremonial was attended by Charles Powell, Nora Black, Richard Rowsey, Glenna Jean Miller, and Kathryn Spurlock. Our class was decreased this year by Lillian Smith and Dulcie Faye Thompson moving to Huntington, and Carl Foster joining the Marines. ln nineteen hundred and forty-four, we started back to school as the flighty juniors. Our class sponsors were Miss Grady and Mrs. Harshbarger. Class officers were elected and Richard Rowsey was president: Gene Howell, vice- president: Mary Lou Hudgins, secretary, and Kathryn Spurlock, treasurer. This was a great year for us inexperienced juniors as we presented the play entitled, Ma's New Husband. The cast included: Gene Howell, Beatrice Walden, Elizabeth Meadows, Betty Wilson, Richard Rowsey, Dale Meadows, Mary Lou Hudgins, Mary Diamond, Charles Murphy, and Dorothy Rowsey. The proceeds from the Junior Play helped to pay for the Junior-Senior Banquet which was another important affair for most of us, and we were scared we'd do something wrong! George Charles' Orchestra played for the dance. Last year was a great year in athletics, too. Henry Richardson and lvan Williams started playing this season. Several bays received sweaters or letters. Richard Weaver started playing basketball. Everette Clark and Richard Weaver were chosen as flag bearers for the band. Mary Lou Hudgins, Mary Diamond, and Betty Wilson were chosen for majorettes. Students attending Citizenship Ceremonial were Elizabeth Meadows, speaker, Maxine Morrison, Charles Powell, Maxine Bledsoe, and Dennis Adkins. Again in forty-five, we last a part of our class. Lucy Gatewood moved to Huntington, Paul Black and Dale Meadows joined the Navy. Finally in l94S, our class enrolled in Milton High School for the last time. Our class officers for the year are Richard Rowsey, president, Charles Powell, vice-president: and Dorothy Rowsey, secretary and treasurer. . - Members of our class to withdraw this year are Henry Richardson, who joined the Navy, and Phyllis Austin. Corella Martin and Lena Gail Blackwood were married. As I am up to date and there is no more history, l must say farewell to our successors and hope you will have as nice a time as we have had.
