DEDICATION
Dr. Elliot Van N. Diller, Professor of Philosophy and
Religion and former chaplain, leaves Mills this year.
Many underclassmen will miss his classes in the
literature of the Old and New Testament. This year's
staff, therefore, dedicates the 1969 Crest to Dr. Diller
with great appreciation for his many years of service
to the students of Mills College.

DANCE
The two most obvious changes in the dance depart-
ment concern thedanuary term and the college
acquisition of video-tape equipment. The January term
allowed dance students to devote all of their time
and energy to the act of dancing, they were not dis-
tracted by lecture and discussion materials. Between
January 1968 and March 1969, video-tape equipment
was utilized as one of the most successful devices
in teaching dance technique. Students were able to
do a piece and then immediately see how- they per-
formed it. Most of the other changes 'that have
occurred evolved slowly but they are significant.
These changes involve course content innovation,
increased enrollment and more dance expressivity.
Students want to do their own thing in their own way
and this includes experimenting with music, tapes,
sounds and props and choreographing their own per-
formances on and off campus.

DR MATIC ARTS
The major changes in the department of Dramatic Arts
concern the curriculum. During the 1968-69 school
year, two history of drama courses were combined into
a seminar in theatre history with subject matter chang-
ing each semesterg also, a course in criticism was in-
troduced. The methods of instruction for the "Semi-
nars in Theatre History" are uniqueg during the week,
students listen to taped lectures at their own conven-
ience and have one class meeting and one individual
discussion session with the instructor. The new course,
"Dramatic Theory in Criticism," includes in part of its
work attendance at live theatre productions as a type
of laboratory experience followed by appropriate dis-
cussion. This year innovative plans have been made
for the creation of new courses which will be taught in
Fall 1969. For the first time, the freshmen will be of-
fered a separate course in acting, and a course in
voice for the stage has been introduced. Also being
tried is the course, "Theatre Practicum through Pro-
duction Units," which is designed to expose students
to all aspects of the theatre,-that is, performance, light-
ing, construction, painting, properties, and costume.
This course will be taught by all four faculty members
and is an indication of the growing trend towards team
teaching. -Miss Evaline Wright, Dept. Chairman

MUSIC
During the past four years, the Mills College Center for
Contemporary Music has been the most influential in-
stigator of changes in the Music department. The Mu-
sic Center, consisting of the Performing Group and
Tape Music Center, has brought about an emphasis on
an understanding of contemporary music. It offers stu-
dents an opportunity to work in electronic composi-
tion and to perform contemporary and classic works
with professional performers. Among the new courses
offered this year were: "Technique of lntermedia and
the Arts" and "Seminar in Electronic Music." At the
end of the school year, 1969-70, the major four-year
Rockefeller Grant of S200,000 to establish and main-
tain the Music Center will terminate. Mills College will
then be responsible for financing the program. Other
significant changes in the Music department have
been the revision of course structure and sequence
which disbanded composite courses, the remodeling
of the music building to furnish adequate studio space,
and the acqquisition of an organ inthe Chapel of Mills
College. -Miss Margaret Lyon, Dept. Chairman

EGLIH
The most dramatic changes in the English department
occurred, du-ring the freshman and senior years of this
year's graduating class. ln Fall 1965, freshman semi-
nars were firmly established as a part of the freshman
requirements, however, starting next year they will be
continuing on a voluntary basis. Also innovated during
the Fall 1965 semester, was a graduate level program
with-an emphasis, on creative writing. Undergraduate
students are only allowed to take on writing course as
a requirement for a major, the emphasis is on litera-
ture. This year, the replacement of the senior com-
prehensive exams and the addition of the January
term initiate curriculum changes. ln place ofthe exams,
a comprehensive seminar was introduced in which
seniors work with the staff -on a series of projects
which cut across field, periods, and genres in an effort
to bring the total work of the major together. For the
January term, the English department helped to or-
ganize the interdivisional course, "The Image of Man."

FCJREIG LA GLIAGES
Major changes in the language department concern the use
of the language laboratory for supplementary instruction in
foreign languages and courses in translating foreign litera-
ture. A number of courses are offered in the letter division to
enable students with no foreign language mastery to learn
about foreign literature. "The Mind of Modern German,"
"Modern French Thought," and "The Death of God in Mod-
ern Literature" are examples of this trend. The language de-
partment played a significant role in initiating a division
major in Western literature in Fall 1968. Change in curricu-
lum has been the increasing number of classes that are being
taught by more than one member of the staff. Team teaching
exposes students to different points of view, ideally sparks
their participation and interest. With more students traveling
abroad, there has been a growing emphasis on the promo-
tion of oral facility. Since Fall 1966 conversation courses in
French, German, and Spanish have been offered. These
classes for which no credit is received are taught by native
students and include such extra-curricular activities as
movies, plays, and dinners. The language laboratory, which
was completed in Fall 1965, is being utilized more and more
as a cultural accessory, available are an assortment of for-
eign tapes of plays, music, books, and general information.

Developments within the courses of the Physical Sci-
ences and Mathematics department have been insti-
gated by the acquisition of new equipment. From 1964
to 1969, three National Science Foundation grants
were received by this department and most of the
money was used to buy better equipment and instru-
mentation. For the chemistry classes, three Mettler
balances were purchased, besides 15 standard tape
apparatus sets and an Infrared Spectrometer. An Ultra-
violet Spectrometer was donated by Mr. Beckman. ln
July 1968 Mills obtained two terminals that are directly
connected to the Stanford ,Computer IBM 360 Model
67. All of the facilities of this computer are available
to anyone who knows how to use them. Primarily, in
this department they have been used in conjunction
with mathematics courses. On a lesser scale, two
other computers are also being used. Since 1965, stu-
dents have gone to Hayward to use their Computer
IBM 1620, and in Spring 1968, the General Electric
Computer at Berkeley has been used for immediate in-
teraction. The January term afforded the opportunity
for two new classes to be taught-"Descriptive Astron-
omy" and "The Wismesser Chemical Notation System."

PSYCHOLQGY
ln the psychology department, there has been an
evolving shift towards more student participation in
deciding course content and direction. Within the
framework of a course, a class can focus on subjects
of its own choice or a 'student can independently do
related research. As 'a new experiment. in pro-
grammed learning, two seniors under faculty super-
vision taught "Introduction Psychology 493' Commu-
nity involvement is receiving more emphasis. During
the January term, eight students were placed in spe-
cial programs in Oakland public schools for typical
children. ln the Clinical Psychology program, the
growing aspect has been its testing of retarded chil-
dren. ln 1966-67, students examined a total of 282
children, with a total of 401 visits to public schools in
Alameda and San Leandro. By Spring 1970, the psy-
chology wing of the Life Science Building which was
begun in June 1968 will be complete.

SCDCIAL SCIENCES
During the last four years, the efforts of the social sci-
ence department have been to relate its curriculum
more closely to contemporary issues. Among the
courses dealing with Urban Problems are: "The Semi-
nar in Urban Politics," "The Political Economy of Oak-
land," which was offered at Berkeley, and similar
courses to be offered at Mills during the coming year
in Economics. Since the early 1940s "Race and Ethnic
Relations" has been taught, but in Fall 1967, the de-
partment started to consciously incorporate courses
in black studies. "A History of the American Negro"
was first offered in Spring 1968. In Fall 1968, Profes-
sor Mlahleni Njisane was hired to teach courses in
African studies. He is one of the first three. black pro-
fessors hired at Mills College in response to the re-
quests of the Black Student Union. The history sec-
tion has opened virtually all courses to freshmen and
sophomores. Since Fall 1967, the history faculty has
taken the position that motivation is a key factor, and
that a student should not be kept out of class because
of chronological age.

HEALTH, PHYSICAL
EDUCATION AND
RECREATION
Many major curriculum changes in Health, Physical
Education and Recreation have occurred during the
decade of the 196O's. After Spring 1962 no major was
offered in this field, and since Fall 1963 all physical
activities could be taken on the passffail basis. Two-
thirds of the group requirement, which included one
semester of dance and one ofa sport was dropped in
Fall 1967, only the swimming test was retained as a
graduation requirement. Thus, after the freshman year,
students could take whatever classes they wanted. In
Fall 1968 freshman year activity was dropped giving
first year students a choice as to their physical educa-
tion classes for the first time in 26 years. The health
education seminar became an elective and the only
requirements that remained were two years of indi-
vidually selected physical education courses and the
passing of a swimming test. During the January term
structured classes are not offered by instructors and
recreational facilities are available. This year the phys-
ical education staff organized a posture and ortho-
pedic clinic where students could come and talk about
their problems and ask questions.

Q
Teacher Education is concerned with two different but
complementary programsg one is involved with per-
sons preparing for professional teaching jobs, and the
other deals with people already holding teaching posi-
tions. The changes which have occurred in this de-
partment have evolved with its attempts to strengthen
the communication and understanding between these
two groups. The most striking and significant advance
has been the interweaving of the pre-service and in-
service programs during the January term. This year
was the first time that a class in teacher education
had an opportunity to go out and work in a junior high
school for an extended period of time. Eight students
from Mills College had a total teaching experience.
They worked seven hours a day for one month as
teacher aidsg they taught classes, proof read, attend-
ed council and department meetings, and participated
in club activities and social functions. Another occa-
sion for realistic training is offered at the Mills
College Nursery School which moved into its new
quarters in Fall 1967. lt allows students to work for
a Nursery School Diploma under the instruction of
professional supervisors in an authentic pre-school
atmosphere. Upward Bound, begun in 1966, is another
opportunity for one to one relationships. Here stu-
dents have a chance to instruct different personali-
ties. As the teacher education department becomes
more involved with the Oakland community, it will con-
tinue to change. -Miss Margaret Gill, Dept. Chairman

membership again this year. Each week prac-
