FRESHMAN CAMP Freshman Camp is an orientation week- end for new students at Millikin. It is an annual event held at Allerton Park. Fresh- man Camp Chairpersons, Moni Roytek and Keven Barge, along with the counsel- ors planned activities to help students adjust to Millikin. Activities include a dance, movie, games, and last but not least, " The Watermelon. " 107 HOMECOMING Homecoming King and Queen, Steve Pill- ing and Kim Gregurich, reigned over " Mil- likin ' s Hit Parade " which was the them ' of this years celebration. Laura Parous and Ellen Winchell planned the weeks ac- tivities which included the Talent Show, Trivia Bowl, Games, and Parade. The Big Blue pleased the crowd by defeating North Park. 108 CAMPUS CHEST Several new Campus Chest activities planned by Millikin students helped net more than $2,200 for the Illinois Heart Foundation. Revolving around a " Star Wars " theme, students planned fund- raising activities to benefit the Heart Foundation. A campus-community variety show kicked off Campus Chest activities and was followed by " Faculty Feud. " Campus Chest activities concluded with the annual Dance-a-thon in the R.T.U.C. In addition to the March fund-raising activi- ties, more than 60 students and faculty completed CPR training provided by vol- unteers from the Heart Foundation. I 112 The Birks Museum The Birks Museum is located in the former Gorin reading room. More than four hundred items have been given to the University by Miss Florence Birks who is a member of the class of 1926 and by the late Miss Jenna Birks who is a member of the class of 1922. The collection was assembled over a period of over forty years and represents fine glassware, chi- na and porcelain from pre-revolutionary China, Eng- land, America and countries throughout Europe. University Concert Band 126 The Four Freshmen The Lettermen Martin-Thomas-Adni Trio Appearing at Kirkland 128 The Paratori Brothers Ain ' t Misbehavin ' 133 Millikin Football team once again made winning a tradition. Merle Chapman coached the Big Blue to a 6-3 record and a big victory over IWU to end the season. Johnnie Rolle and Jeff Ridner were co- capts. Brown. 140 141 Big Blue Wrestlers Members of the wrestling team that posted a 5-3 record in dual matches are, standing, from left to right, Manager Dave Veiek, Jim Bretz, Scott Detwiler, Tim Carlton, Jeff Santos, Terry Gardner, Mike Bonic and Coach Jim Cook; from left, Jesse Chester, Ken Meadows, Lance Burmeister, Scott Bertram and Mike Leusch. Coach Jim Cook ' s wrestling team finished with a 5-3 dual match record and was fifth in the CCIW championships held at Millikin in February. The Big Blue won the championship of the Knox tournament and finished third in the Washington University meet. A highlight of the dual matches was a 23-21 victory over Notre Dame Senior Jim Bretz, who was second in the CCIW meet, was named the team ' s most valu- able wrestler after posting a 17-11 season record Other top records belonged to senior co- captains Scott Bertram (22-19) and Ken Meadows (20-7) and freshman Lance Bur- meister (16-7-1). Burmeister set a CCIW re- cord with a pin in 0; 19 in the third place match at the conference meet. Bertram was third and senior Jesse Chester and sophomore Tim Carlton were fourth in the CCIW meet. 142 . Friend, er, D. S Millikin was the site of the CCIW championships this year where fr. Jim Friend was Mu ' s leading scorer as he set 2 conf. records. He also qualified for the NCAA Div. Ill natl. championships in 4 events, setting records in each. Friend was MVP, DeGalan was most improved and qualified for the NCAA meet in 2 events. Sophomore Wayne Dunning was named to the first five and senior Gary Jackson was named to the second five on the Col- lege Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin all-conference teams selected by league coaches. Jackson, who scored more than 1,000 points in his career and set school and league records for shooting accuracy, was a first team Academic All-America selection. Those honors capped a season in which the Big Blue posted a 14-12 record overall and a 9-7 mark in the CCIW. Dun- ning led the team with a 15.0 scoring average with Jackson and senior Dave Kupish posting 10.7 and 10.3 marks. Dun- ning was voted the most valuable player. Senior Karen Colton was named most valu- able player on the women ' s basketball team that posted a 13-9 record and earned a sixth straight appearance in the lAlAW state tour- nament. Colton closed her career as Millikin ' s ail-time leading scorer and rebounder with 1,325 points and 1,054 rebounds. Holder of numer- ous other school records, she was a second team Academic All-America selection. Freshman Jodi Foster, who was named to the all-tournament team at the state meet, tied the single-season scoring record with 437 points and led the team in scoring, field goal and free throw accuracy and assists. Sophomore Tami Sender was second in scor- ing with a 17.2 average and Colton was third with a 9.9 average. Freshman Becky Hays and senior Kim Rogers were second and third in rebounding with 8.7 and 8.0 averages re- spectively. Colton led with an 1 1.3 mark. After splitting four games on a season-open- ing trip to California, the women had a five- game winning streak at mid-season and then won four of their final five games to earn a state tourney bid.
