MSC CELEBRATES ITS 125th ANNIVERSARY We celebrote onniversanes not to commemorote oge but becouse we need reossuronce of good institutions soid New York Times Foundation President Fred M Hechmger, the guest speaker ot the convocation commemorating the 125th anniversary of the founding of MSC ot Lyte Auditorium on May 3 A musical introduction to the program began ot obout 9 40 a.m os the MSC wind ensemble conducted by Dr Paul G. Fisher presented four orrongements os an audience of approximately 350 people filed into Lyte Auditorium The oudience consisted of current and retired faculty staff administration students, alumni and friends of the college A processionol of faculty and Board of Trustees members, dressed in block caps ond gowns with various color soshes was led by Dr. Mary Elizabeth Dixon faculty morshol os the wind ensemble accompanied the march Following the playing of the Notional Anthem the Rev. Edword A. Blackwell began his invocation with a quote from G. K Chesterton The most important giving we can give is thanks giving He then closed the prayer ond Dr Williom Duncan president of MSC introduced the next three speokers. William H Bolger. chairman of the Board of Trustees: Thomos L. Showers president of student senate ond Dr Marion L Oliver provost and vice president for ocodemic affairs. Bolger os an olumnus. remorked on the preporotion MSC s foculty hos given him. ond Showers expressed appreciation from the student population for the preparation current students ore receiving from oil aspects of the college Introduced by Oliver os on author, a scholor a journalist, o histonon ond on educator Hechmger begon his address by saying ihot MSC s 125th anniversary represents 125 years of quality in teochmg ond quality In oil areas of life Hechmger held the crowd when he said It's time to toke o stop It's time to get our beonngs on a world that is changing and mokes demands on us and our institutions Hechinger soid In order to moke less become better there must be a return to quohty o common core of shored experiences thot people con rely on when making decisions, a need to regom respect for our languages on extension of this respect of language to respect ond acquire knowledge of other people's ways and words the building of bridges between school ond society, and between education ond the community. and trommg to seriously view education os Horace Mann colled it. the bolonce wheel of our society A musicol interlude took place before the introduction of audience ond plot-form guests by Duncan. The platform guests included Oliver. Showers Bolger President Emeritus D L Biemesderfer. Dixon. Hechinger Frances Keller, co-chairperson of 125th onniversory committee. Dr. Gory Reighord vice president of student affairs, ond Duncon. Keller presented presidential scholarships nomed in honor of Dr and Mrs William Duncan and Dr ond Mrs D L. His oppeoronce wos rumpled os nothing he wore seemed to be in place the grey sun's pocket lopels were tucked inside the pockets, the skinny block tie wos flung down his chest directed by the wrinkles of his white shirt, ond the brown shoes were reminiscent of yesterday’s clothes The mon—Leslie Nielsen in Clarence Dorrow. o one-man ploy performed April 17. 1960. in Lyte Auditorium Dorrow wos o famous American lawyer He is best remembered for the Scopes tnol in which he defended the right to teoch evolution in Tennessee schools Dorrow. os portroyed by Nielsen, wos o mon concerned with the welfare of the laborer ond the poor The courtroom scenes were filled with passion, while the scenes of Dorrow s private life were of o more nostolgic air This, along with his rumpled oppeoronce. hinted thot Dorrow wos disinterested in himself ond devoted his energy to those whom he defended. Out Dorrow wos not olwoys o serious mon He often interrupted o serious moment with humor For instance, when defending on alleged robber who sotd thot he'd get the money to poy Dorrow in o few doys. Dorrow soid. Better find yourself another lawyer. I don't wont to occept money which hos been stolen—so recently. It wasn’t like wotchmg Leslie Nielsen, it wos like seeing Clarence Dorrow soid Maryonne Ormsby. on MSC student John Appleby of Downmgtown soid.
