k l 17 i iv 7 i f 1 1? 1 Jr (iKJlf UJ HI 1 CAMPUS WALKS: Essential but Unique ANY hundreds of feel traverse tlie Millersville walks and paths, either hurrying to the familiar or searching for the unknown. Though paths very often intersect, it is quite possible that they may never meet again a - each advances toward it- destination. Winding, twisting, crossing, stretching, yet binding in many respects, all very aptly describe Millersville's unique network of walks and pathways. Interestingly enough, they speak of togetherness ami comfort to some, of loneliness or solemnity to others, and frequently they |»cak of n kind of Iteauty. Nevertheless, to all, these roads reflect Millersville's unfaltering determination to guide or channel each individual as he searches for the path to true scholarship. The age of many of the pathways, as evidenced hy continuous wearing away, quickly recalls the vigor of Millersville's pioneer spirit, without doubt, one of the institution's most venerated traditions. At the same time, the serenity and unpretentious dignity of these campus thoroughfares, eminently portrayed by the more elderly walkways, provide a definite unity with the past. Not always docs the student stay on the straight and narrow the trodden gras is mute evidence of this fact—hut most of the time he finds his way again. Proud of the past. MSC students advance upon the ancient pathways w ith staunch confidence of their ability l attain their goals in tin- future. Perhaps the uniqueness and actual attractiveness of the many campus walkways is found in an abstract blending into the overall oneness of heart that is so much a part of nearly every MSC student. Yet. in a strange sense, if one allows his observation to linger indefinitely, soon he will notice the formation of channels proceeding, not as a single mass, but as a countless number of individual mads that produce a spirit of magnanimity, another element in the sacred tradition of Millersville. In addition to featuring a definite uniqueness, the campus walkways possess an innate cssentialness to the college scene that could scarcely come near to In-ing overstated. To say that the walks and paths serve as viaducts ami boulevards to campus activity is to minimize the fact to a great degree. One does not hesitate to question this truth upon instantly noting some eighteen hundred pairs of feet tread the Millersville concourses daily. Whether the destination is a mere few steps from the Student Center to Old Main, or the long and wearisome mileage from Lyte Auditorium to Oshurn Mall, easy access to the varying centers of collegiate activity is made available to all the students through the campus' clever linkage system its walks and pathways. So consequently, the total uniqueness and esscntialncss of Millersville's walkways is on review. To reiterate a previously mentioned assertion: the liaison of paths has been constructed, in part, with the s|x-cific intent to bring about the most proper coordination and congruity of college lib . Therefore, with thi- notion in mind, the 1962 Touchstone staff sets out to offer a review, hy the effectual means of our campus w alks, of the captured moments of the college year, 1961-62. at Millersville Stale College. 4

That’s opposition, got that other comma in there . . . A Man, a Smile, And a Cigar... DEDICATION Trailing a cloud of cigar smoke, through which can hr seen a wide smile. Mr. Joseph E. Rhen glides his wav along the corridors of Milletsvillc Slate College to and from his daily classes. Many other members of the faculty do likewise, hut none can match the cigar or the smile when Mr. Rhen is in top form. Needless to say, he is usually in top form. As a matter of fact, he has been in top form at Millers-vilie ever since he joined the faculty hack in 1956. A veteran of high school teaching at several Pennsylvania institutions, Mr. Rhen proceeded to bring his classroom experience to the campus. Along with the wide smile- the cigar is parked outside the classroom, hut not the smile- Mr. Rhen lakes a deep understanding of student problems, a sense of humor to leaven the solution, and his penetrating insight into teaching right into the class with him. A firm believer in getting to the heart of any problem. Mr. Rhen insists on many conference's with his students. He believes that all situations can be solved by talking them out. Mr. Rhen was one of the advisers of last year’s senior class and the group was unanimous in its feelings that he did his job well and successfully. It was a happy class, that's for certain! This year for the first time. Mr. Rhen “belonged” to the English Department. Previously, he had doubled in foreign languages teaching his specialty, Latin, lie loved his ablatives, but now he’s pleased to be able to devote full time to English. Mr. Rhen and his wife, Helene, live in Elizabethtown. Because of his obvious love of the teaching profession. his ready wit, his understanding, his devotion to students—yes, and his cigar, too the staff of the 1962 Touchstone respectfully dedicate this edition to Mk. Joseph E. Rhen. 6 1 1
