We may well consider that our acquaintance began during your initial preparation for teaching and during my first year as President of the College. From my point of view 1 have noted with interest and satisfaction the growth and development you have manifested. I am confident that you are well on the way to the realization that an education is begun at birth and that it never ends. You have prepared to serve in the Public Schools —an institution that has almost reached the century mark in its development. As you become more vitally connected with it, you will realize that it has advanced under the urge of problems in the development and enlightenment of youth and adults. A century ago the pioneer struggled to establish the Common School. You will be called upon to assist in extending the influence of the Public School to meet the many demands that modern society is placing upon it. The field in which you choose to work abounds with problems and will be very challenging to your future growth and development. I have the firm belief that the life you have led and the contacts and the associations you have formed here will be of great assistance to you as teachers and leaders of children. So successful was this attempt to provide for teacher training that the institute continued until 1859, when it was recognized as the First Pennsylvania State Normal School. In 1927 Millersville received authority from the State Council of Education to grant the degree of Bachelor of Science in Education (R.S. in Ed.). C. won the basketball championship of the Eastern Pennsylvania State Teachers College district when the team under the captaincy of Jim Witmer won six consecutive conference games in brilliant style. The last State Teachers College game was lost to Kutztown on the Keystone floor 33-27. West Chester, victor for many years over Millersville, was defeated twice.
