Byerly and in Mat he-ntalir under Mr. .Schlnuch In September, 1902, lie was admitted to the Junior Class of Franklin ami Marshall College, graduating with the lit It. degree in 1901. again representing bis class as one of the speakers at the commencement exercises. The summer of 1904 was spent as a student in the graiiunte school of the I’nivemity of Chicago. After a tour of the Middle West, he entered the graduate school of Harvard I'niversity. receiving the degree of A.M. in 1905. His work here was in the department of History and Economic , where he came into |ien onal contact with such men an Professor Channing and Hart. A great ileal of time here was spent in original research. Ho chose as his special held the War Department, collecting and arranging a large amount of valuable material from original records and documents. During his stay at Harvard he became a member of the Graduate Club and of the American Historical Association. After receiving hi degree, he decided to accept, for n second time, the call from his Alma Mater, and in Seji-temlier, 1905, he became Superintendent of the Model School, which position he has so ably filled during the past three years. Mr. Harlsild is a member of the Lutheran Church, and he has always exerted a strong and active influence for the moral as well ns the intellectual improvement of those with whom he came into contact, both as student and a teacher. The Sunday evening meeting, the Young Men's Christian Association and the rause of Temperance have always received his most eordinl and energetic support. At the age of eighteen he began teaching in his home school, where he remained two years. In 1893 he was promoted to the prin-ripalship of the schools at Arendtsville, where he remained three years. He entered the Millet villc Normal School in 189(1 and was graduated in 1898 as one of tire honor men of his cl:i» After graduation lie remained at the Normal four years as teacher of history and other subjects. In the meantime he completed the work in the advance courses for the degrees of Bachelor ami Master of Pedagogy.
