It is not all glory, neither is it heavy with honor. Siipjawe ho should falsify, and thereby lower the reputation of the class: whore, then, is honor gone? Assuming unreserved confidence, the historian now sets forth a brief history of 'OS. A traveler stopping in the old inland town of Lancaster in Sopteinlier. might have seen a goodly number of would-be students of marked physical prowess, mental ability, and moral stamina going their respective ways from various districts of the (iurricn Spot and the surrounding counties, toward the Millersville State Normal School. Then it was the (.'lass of I'.MtS Is-gan its history. To the memlrers of the class the first impression was meet ungratifying. The buiklings were undergoing repairs, temporary walks were erected, and a dark avenue had to Ik? ascemled Itcfore reaching the principal's office. A hearty welcome was given, and after Iteing instructed in school iftities and relieved of some money, the newcomers were directed to the corridors and after considerable search lodged in their longed-for rooms. The next morning school ojiened. the prospective class went their various wavs to the Chapel, and received a foretaste of the series of admonitions to olwervc the positive and prohibitive rules of the school. THE SENIOR MILLER SVILLI AN 95 week ami terms flied lĀ v. the claw oriented itself, took up tin various responsibilities. in Mime instances following the Ircaten | atlis. in others launching into the purely original A spirit of class loyalty in time lierumr sealed, ami in the Middler year the class nave a most pleasing sociable, which, by the presentation of In Colonial Days. reflected not only class loyalty, but. loyal patriotism ns well. The class sociable given during the Senior year was no less n complete success than the preceding function Though unfortunately handieappod in bosket ball, the girls made a brilliant showing, and no doubt their pluck would have won had the boy Itcen allowed to cheer for them. Hie boys team more than balanced any discrepancy, for they certainly did not give the underclass teams any quarter. The class has a high record in basket ball, having won and held the Championship Basket Ball Cup brought to this institution in lflOti by Physical Director Cooper. This record has not Ix-en sustained by any other chw. On the diamond the class has defeateI every class team that challenged it. not even the noble team of 07 excepted. In the Model, after :t few reverses, the class embarked courageously on the sea of its chosen profession, and under the superintendence of trusted pilots dcvelojied ability which predicts n successful continuance of the course so well Itegun. In Xovernlier. ' i7. n dark gloom overshadowed the .Normal when the Class of āOs left for a grand tour of Washington After three days in the Capital City, during which time much invaluable information anil experience which can never be learned in school was gained, the class returned to ita accustomed duties . greeted by the welcome of the underclassmen, who hud I teen āvery lonesome without the Seniors. % THE SENIOR MILLER SV1LLIAN As school life only a lieginning, a preparation, so each phase of tIn history must lx left incomplete; but it is ho|xxl that the not uncertain Mrt.hr. mmlc by āOS may not fail to be an emulation to those coming the same way. The |xrio | of class fellowship U almost over, but a lasting friendship unites the class more firmly to the Alma Muter. The future of the class has lĀ ecn east under favorable auspices. The seed sown by noble instructors will I star a rich harvest. The duties of life now call, and in a few days hind recollections will supply the place of pleasant school hours. ā ('i.ksikxt B. THE SENIOR MILLERSV1LLIAN 99 history of Class of 1009 E twelfth of December. 11100. dawned cold and dear. Near the doi o of that day. the faculty of Millorwville discovered n marvelous little organism. which they (tiled the Class of 1009. From Deccmlx r till June this young creature lay quiet, wrupixal iu its chitinoU covering; hut one warm day it emerged from its larva stale and kept its Garnet and !okl waving in the breeze; Juniors ami Iārcps were amazed over its sudden awakening. The next fall it again broke from its chrysalis and adopted a shield, with which it hoped to establish a strong position for itself in the battle of life. It won an acknowledgement of its power in the great struggle for existence on the foot-ball field. To the victor la-longs the spoils,ā and that winter, in the second great struggle, the girls succeeded in carrying off the much-prized cup. In March of that Spring this most interesting Class t,f 1000 made its debut into the social work) ami was there as successful as on the field of battle. The chapel was indeed a fairy-land. and under the shade of the (inrnet and Cold umbrella and in that of the palms, the guests In-held the mysteries and wonders that appeared Over the Carden Wall, The Hass of 1009 is thus far well pleased with life and expects next year to grow stronger, more powerful and more progressive, for she climlm though the rocks lĀ e rugged. At a sulaequent meeting the lĀ oys decided to get brown skull raps, with the numerals 1910ā in gold. They made a very pretty appearance. The l vs showed spirit during the foot-ball season by defeating the over-confident Middlers by the score of 5 to 0. Well, Wear me. Iāve witnessed quite ;i few, remarked a Ā lrĀ©k gray mouse to a friend one liny, and merry affair they were. W hat a host of bright memories rise fa-fore mv eye at the thought of one! I won About to retire one evening, n little Inter than usual, when, ju t as I arrived at my home (I then lived on fourth hall). I heard a low, soft, gliding sound. I paused: the sound advanced, and approaching me. I rould discern in the darkness n long line of kimoned figure . They kept steadily advancing, when, to my amazement, they entered the door by which I war landing. At find 1 could not realize it. for a teacher roomed just arrow the hall. War ever Mich courage, such daring, known by the heroine of old? I thought it well to join the assemblage, co slipping unnoticed within the door. I remained n silent witness to the merry scene which ensued. First of nil. with n great deal of giggling and shoving afa-ut. counties dainties were produced. Ah me! they looked so tempting, and I toll you. little time was lost in beginning the feast. While the odor of chicken salad, olives and sandwiches was borne to my nostrils, while I hinged with sueh n longing as only a hungry mouse can know, yet the picturesque Inanity of the scene was not lost to me, though I ntn only a mouse. THE SENIOR MILLERSVILLIAN 139 The large silver moon ruse bright and clear ill its sea of dark blue sky. casting its pale, luminous ray over the little party seated Turkish fashion on the floor. Ixiw chuckle of laughter, u violent coughing spell, hoarse whi |M n and olive seeds living hither and yon, only served to stouten their courage and increase the noise. Presently my heart quailed within me. for out in the hall 1 heard what seemed at lint n low foot-fall, later a violent thud, followed by a groan, when the door was thrown hastily o| en anil another kimoned figure, jumping madly about with a stubbed toe. was greeted the heroine of the hour. āStories, jokes, riddles, bits of gossip were then told in turn by each one. the feasting never ceasing for a moment. I really became alarmed the way those girls ate; would they never stop? Cakes, salad, fruit, candies, pickles and pies disappeared in an alarming fashion. At length n sharp tap was heard upon the door The door knob was violently shaken Oh. the mail confusion which followed! Under the lard, back of chairs, in the closet they piled in their wild excitement. One poor girl, who lost her presence of mind, fell in a miserable heap in the middle of the floor. Another more venturous cried: 'Who is it ?ā āA merry little laugh was heard, and then a burst of luughter from the entire party, which I really feared would Itetray them. A mischievous Middlcr, knowing of the feast, had come to scare us os a joke Time lip| od away very quickly, and before they knew it. the first streaks of morning light were seen in the east. Tired out with the night's festivities, the party broke up. the long train moving softly and silently down the Imll. I now came in for a goodly portion of the spoil , which I enjoyed immensely. I wish that 1 could witness 140 THE SENIOR MILLERSVILLIAN another such fcast by the merry girl Ā«'f āOS. and with a mournful shake of his little gray head, the little mouse jukI his friend, whose ism vernation 1 had overheard. Many chivalrous and amusing incidents might be cited on the various mcmlwrs of the party. Several under unfamiliar circumstances met with very novel experiences, which have had much to do with their life since that time.
