Gnftnvte Nrle Hochstetler the lrttle barrel comes rollrng onto the stage He stands there for a mrnute whrle he puts hrs chaw of dentrne off to one cheek and then shouts Ve bucht du' He begrns Vell vhen l graduated I vorked at de hard vare store for a vhrle Vun day vhen I vas vrxrng a state for Emmanuel Yutzy a farmer east of ere I vas yet strll vrxcn the stafe chust den I saw hrs daughter It vas lope at frrst srght Ve ve marrred soont after dat Dat was rn 1952 Ve now haf 23 chrldren On Sundays after church ve chews up for a ballgame Countrn moder and me ve hate almost enough for 3 ballteams Charlene Mrller comes to the stage We notrce a very defrnrte change Gone rs the sweetness of her hrgh school days She pulls a key charn from her pocket and begrns twrrlrng rt as she speaks Some of you have probably heard of Slugger Sal Wal thats me' I bought the Cleve land lndrans' Im the frrst player manager srnce Lou Boudreau Last season we nosed out those blankety blank Yankees and went on to wrn the World Serres from the Dodgers It was the frrst World Champronshrp won smce l948' Iames Wetss tauntrly trots to the stage Hrs explanatron to hrs classmates rs I thought I could get rrch qurck so I bet all of my thrrtyftve dollars on one horse Sad case- the horse lost I then trred my luck at musrc I have a band of my own whrch has run Sprke Iones out of busmess Our best sellrng record was An Imrtatron of the M H S Band Mrrram Stauffer comes toward the stage wrth that stlly grggle we remember She says Srnce they had to pay me an unemployment check each week for ten years the County Commrssroners gave me a rob Every nrght after take my lrttle candle and dutrfully lrght every street lrght' Then I carry my lantern and call two oclock and alls well' Howard Skelly rs the next one to recrte I decrded that one reason the world rs rn such a mess rs because of lrquor I have campargned very strongly agarnst rt Some of my many clubs are Beer Bottle Busters Anti Drlnkers and the lrke My most rnfluencrng sp ecn was Down wrth Lrquor Rum and Beer Prohrbrtron Trme Is Here' Aldeen Mrller srster of the famous slugger comes down to grve her speech I own operate and edrt the Holmes County Farmer Hub' We have a Louella Parsons column and a murder page One nght Mrrram Stauffer farled to lrght one lrght' Rrght on that street the bloodrest murder Mrllersburg has ever seen was commrtted IThe one and only murder'l We never found the murderer I was ac cused of murderrng someone Just so I could get news for my paper' Coke Hall demurely comes to the stage Ah' Such a delrcate srght' The narls on hrs perfect hands are at least an rnch long and are polrshed to a gleamrng prnk' I-Irs face smoothly shaven lrghtly powdered Hrs warm blue eyes shrnmg and the lashes becomrngly curled And hrs harr oh hrs harr' Those stubborn curls the hrgh school gals loved are gone replaced by waves unrformly set Truly here rs a gentleman Wrth perfect artrculatron he begrns I am glad to see all my wonderful classmates agarn It has been a long perrod of trme srnce we together sat rn thrs audrtorrum As I lrstened to the other speeches I notrced how much some of you changed But l havent really changed The rnterest I always had rn manners fashrons and styles and harrdos has profrted me I run a harrdressrng salon rn New York the Cafe de la Pelopere In the mornrnq I perfect new harr dos for the ladres I frxed Rrta Hayworth s harr when she marrred her llth husband Dean Stockwell In the afternoon I teach manne s My best student rs Srr Walter Ralergh I attrrbute all my success to the manners I practrced rn hrgh school Suddenly the quret peace rs broken Bang' Bangl A knock kneed blonde rs comrng down the axsle Bang! The reason I came out west rs that I won a peroxrde blonde contest The ranch I lrve on was one of the prrzes And I surely have funl Yahoo! And wrth a few more bangs she goes back to her seat Bob Huston struts down the arsle He looks lrke a rmportant' guy I wonder what he rs' He clears hrs throat and begrns I became Presrdent of the Unrted States I fulfrlled Mr Almendrngers dream of an rndependent trcket I was elected on a completely rndependent vote My great est problem durrng my admrnrstratron was how to drvrde the profrts of the U N group I had plenty of experrence rn hrgh school on thrs subrect The questron then was thrs What to do about the concessrons of tournaments between the Hr Y and Trr H1 Y Maggre Lrtteral drrves up to the stage She comes to an abrupt halt Jumps out of her trny car and onto the stage She looks at the audrence and says Ah-ah I-ah became the MHS drrvrng teacher when Mr Crrssey at long last decrded to retrre Ah excuse me a mrnutel fThe drrvrng rnstructor reaches down and turns off the swrtch Und IIQNS of her Carl She now contrnues The brggest rterr-ah rn my lrst of teachrng rs-ah teachrng the stu dent to-ah park a car Ah smce rt was the easrest thrng for me to do when I took drrvrng rn schooll lahemll Another obrect rs teachtng them to start wrthout lerkrng Well-ah I guess that s-ah-all I have to say' She crawls rnto her trny car and starts me motor But somethrng rs wrong' The car rs Jerkrng' After Jerkrng about ten feet Maggre realrzes that the emergency brake rs on' Then she grtnds the gears and starts forward agarn Ierk' Ierk' Oh there she goes' And she rs out of srght lrke a streak of dust' There was rust one frnal speech to be made lt was not hard to recognrze Marcella Grossman I belreve the years have been krndest of all to her and why not? Marcella who never was one to get excrted always permrttrng others to grve therr oprnrons frrst now spoke calmly and brrefly of her rnterestrng lrfe Whrle a student nurse at Pomerene Hosprtal I marrred the Chref of Staff I later became Supt of Nurses Through our successful manage ment that rnstrtutron has grown untrl rt now occupres the north portron of the crty of Mrllersburg She pauses realrzxng that she has sard more than she rntended Wrth that calm and frtendly smrle that each of us re member so dearly Marcella takes her place wrth the others IMy the thrngs she could tell rf she only wouldl We the senrors of 1950 are out of school lrke a streak of dust Here we stand enterrng the gates of real lrfe whrch road shall we take?
