A 52 a6zwf5 Destroyer Squadron FIFTEEN departed San Diego California in October 1971 to deploy to Yokosuka Japan as part of tne Navy Overseas Family Residence Program Snips and families arrived in November 1971 and began to explore tneir nevv Japanese envi ronment In December tne squadron left Yokosuka to participate in an exercise vvnen nostilities erupted over tne independence of East Pakistan Tne exercise vvas canceled and DESRON FIFTEEN snips and staff steamed to trie Indian Ocean vvnere tney stayed tnrougn tne early vveeks of 1972 Tnrougnout 1972 Destroyer Squadron FIFTEEN snips spent most of tneir time in tne Gulf of Tonkin eitner on tne gun line off tne Vietnam coast of escort ing aircraft carriers COIVIDESRON FIFTEEN vvas the Gun Line Commander for tne maiority of tne year Following tne cessation of nostilities and tne pullout of U S Forces from Vietnam in early 1973 DESRON FIFTEEN returned to a training and readiness posture Tnis consisted of empnasis on material and training readiness and a transition from gunfire support plat forms to vvell rounded snips Ready Power For Peace During 1974, tne snips vvere able to visit several WESTPAC ports, operated vvitn various aircraft carrier groups and participated in fleet or combined exercise vvitn our Japanese, Korean and Taiwanese allies One DESRON FIFTEEN unit, the USS GURKE, visited Aus tralia I-lovvever, early 1975 found tne snips and staff of DESRON FIFTEEN again off tne coast of Vietnam to assist in tne evacuations of Cambodia and Vietnam In April, a nevv era began for DESRON FIFTEEN vvitn CAUT J. September brougnt the final departure of tnree tnirty year old squadron snips, USS GURKE, USS ROWAN and the RICHARD 8. ANDERSON and in November 1977, the USS BAUSELL IDD-91451 departed. Tnese sliips nave since been decommis- sioned. USS FRANCIS HAMMOND IFF-10671 and USS KNOX joined tne DESRON FIFTEEN as tneir replacements. In November 1981, tne USS TOWERS IDDG-91 arrived to relieve USS PARSONS IDDG-331 vvnicn departed for San Diego in December. This addition nas furtber updated tne combat capabilities of DESRON FIFTEEN. In December 1979, DESRON FIFTEEN entered a nevv pnase of operations vvnen tne lvliddle East Crisis erupted. DESRON FIFTEEN snips and staff snifted to tne Indian Ocean as dedicated members of tne USS IVIIDWAY battle group. Witn the Nevv Anti-Submarine capabilities formidable surface ASW groups in tne Pacific Fleet. Tnrougnout 1980 and the first nalf of 1981, Commander Destroyer Squadron FIFTEEN acted as tne Anti-Submarine Warfare Commander for IVIID- WAY battle group Indian Ocean deployments. Relaxations of Indian Ocean requirements allowed IVIIDWAY battle group to operate again in nome Waters around Japan. Commander Destroyer FIFTEEN served as OCE for Japanese exercises, Battle Group Alpna warfare commander for Nortn Pacific and Sea of Japan operations and as tne Battle Group Commander during a contingency operation in December 1981. Snips of tne squadron operated as escorts for USS IVIIDWAY and continue training and maintenance requirements' to stand ready to participate in Battle Force and surveillance operations Currently COIVIDESRON FIFTEEN consists of six snips' USS TOWERS IDDO 91 uss COCHRANE DDO 21 USS OLD- - F I I - I.
