The events of 1987-BQ were particularly challenging for Midway and required the dedication end support of her entire crew. Coping with the ahip's 'post blister' roll characteristics gave new meaning to heavy weather operations. Highly successful atmsee operations in the Indian Ocean. A graduate of the United States Naval Academrs Class of 1960, Naval Nuclear Power School, t e Armed Forces Staff College, and the U.S. Naval Post- graduate School. Was selected for flag rank in February 1983 and was promoted to his present rank in lune 1987. Sea duty has been primarily in destroyers and cruis- ers. Commanded the USS FARRAGUT lDDG 37l from August 1973 to August 1975, and the USS BAlN- BRIDGE ICGN 253 from May 1980 to june 1983. Shore duty assignments have included a tour in the Office of the Chief of Naval Operations, serving as Anti-Air Warfare Analyst, and as Assistant for Deci- sion Coordination in the Systems Analysis Division lOP-96l. Other tours have included an assignment to the staff of Commander, Naval Air Force, U.S. Atlantic Fleet as the first Readiness and Training Nuclear Propulsion Officer. Served as Executive Officer of USS LONG BEACH lCGN 91 for nearly two years. Following his command of the BAINBRIDGE, he became the Director, DDG 51 Program in the Naval Sea Systems Command, and later the Aegis Shipbuilding Program Manager. lh August 1987, assumed command of Cruiser-De- stroyer Group ONE and the USS MISSOURI Battle Group. g In September 1987, took command of USS MEDWAY Battle Group ALFA, and commenced a Indian Ocean deployment in October 1987. r A l A A Decorations include the Legion of Merit with Gold Star in lieu of Second Award. r Rear Admiral Shaw, is married to the former lanice Muren of Milwaukee, Wisconsin.
