I P USS MIDWAY, first of the three 45,000-ton CVB's started near the end of World War II, was commissioned on September lO, 1945, the product of the Newport News Shipbuilding and Dry Dock Company. MIDWAY's first major operation after shakedown was an exercise in the North Atlantic called Operation Frostbite. With three destroyers and a fleet oiler she conducted tests to evaluate the performance of various types of aircraft in the extreme cold. After three training cruises in the Caribbean, MIDWAY sailed from Norfolk on another experimental mission. This time she was accompanied by scientific observers as she fired a German V2 rocket from her flight deck, the first time such a weapon was fired from a ship at sea on a moving platform. For the next several years MIDWAY sailed with the Altantic Fleet operating in the Mediterranean, Caribbean and Atlantic. She also crossed the Arctic 4 E. - 3 4 1.-X .W ....-,-1 .,fa,.- : 4 .v. . Circle on one cruise gaining membership in the Royal Order of the Blue Nosef, In December l954, MIDWAY departed Norfolk for a world cruise that would take her to such ports as Capetown, South Africa and Colombo. Ceylon before joining the SEVENTH Fleet off Formosa in February, She served there patroling the Formosan Straits and the South China Sea until June when she returned to her new homeport of Alameda, California. In August she was decomissioned to undergo modern- Zation at Puget Sound Shipyard. When she returned to the fleet in September l957, she sported at enclosed hurricane bow, an angled flight deck, two new steam catapults. new arresting gearuiet blast detleetors and the largest aviation crane ever installed on an giirerafr carrier. During the next eight years lNllDW.-XY operated in the Pacifie with the FIRST and Sl?X'FNTll Fleers. A .i . ... . . . ...t-.,::...-,...,.1 an ' f ' 'fe :mr f I-.er ' ' ' ' ' u -mn..:. wav - Lsiipnkh -. -. . .. . highlight of this period was the first fully automatic carrier landing on June 13, 1963. An F-4 Phantom and an F-8 Crusader landed aboard without their pilots touching the aircraft controls. In 1965, operating as part of Task Force 77 in the Tonkin Gulf, MIDWAY's aircraft flew 11,000 combat sorties over Vietnam. During this deployment MIDWAY aircraft were responsible for dowining the first three North Vietnamese MIGs of the conflict. MIDWAY returned home to Alameda in November and was decomissioned in February 1966 at Hunter's Point Naval Shipyard to undergo the most extensive modernization ever completed on a naval vessel. USS MIDWAY, now weighing 64,000 tons, has increased capabilities as a result of the expansion of her flight deck from 2.82 to 4.02 acres, and the addition of three new deck edge elevators, new arresting gear machinery and catapults. She has also added the largest and most complex avionics shops in the fleet, the computerized Naval Tactical Data System and many habitability improvements. Today, MIDWAY is operationally equivalent to the newest conventionally powered carriers and is able to launch and recover aircraft one-third heavier than those of her sister ship, USS CORAL SEA. MIDWAY departed Alameda on April 16, 1971, for service with the U. S. SEVENTH Fleet off the coast of Vietnam. With Air Wing FIVE embarked and a crew of 4,450 the ship launched over six thousand sorties in support of allied operations in the Republic of Vietnam. Returning to Alameda on November 6, MIDWAY has spent a total of 146 days at sea during her 1971 de- ployment and received the Meritorious Unit Citation. MIDWAY again deployed to Southeast Asia on April 10, 1972 in response to a major offensive on the Repub- lic of Vietnam and was the first attack carrier to depart the combat zone after the signing of the cease-fire agreement. Arriving in Alameda on March 3, 1973, MIDWAY had spent ove 250 days at sea. For their per- formance during the last year of conflict, MIDWAY and Air Wing FIVE were awarded the Presidential Unit Citation. On September 11, 1973, MIDWAY left Alameda on one of her most important voyages to date. The men of MIDWAY and Air Wing FIVE moved with their families to Yokosuka, Japan as part of the Navyls Overseas Family Residency Program. MIDWAY has served as an integral fighting unit with the U. S. SEVENTH Fleet conducting operations throughout the Western Pacific. On April 29, 1975, MIDWAY was stationed off the coast of Vietnam when the evacuation began. In two days of operations, a total of 3,073 evacuees were recovered and processed aboard MIDWAY. During the period October 14, 1975 to December 12, 1975, MIDWAY and Air Wing FIVE took a 58-day cruise into the South China Sea and Indian Ocean. This was the first extended cruise away from her new home- port. MIDWAY and Air Wing FIVE have been permanent residents in Japan and the Western Pacific for the last six years. She has conducted joint operations with twelve nations and steamed over 150,000 shaft miles. Beginning in May 1977, VF-151 and VF-161 transi- tioned to F4Js and 6As and Bs for A-6Fx. This CVW-5 transition occurred while the ship was in port for its 60 day EISRA Extended Incremental Ship Repair Availa- bilityj, a unique modernization concept developed for MIDWAY. The air wing transition was completed in September when USS CORAL SEA fighter squaarons CVF-191 and 1945 exchanged their F-4Js with MIDWAY's F-4Ns, prior to CORAL SEA returning to Alameda after her 1977 deployment. In late 1977, MIDWAY made an 87 day deployment to the Indian Ocean where she was the principal partici- pant in Midlink 77, an exercise hosted by the Iranian Navy and including representatives from Pakistan, Turkey, and the Royal Navy. MIDWAY has been awarded the AIRPAC Golden Anchor Carrier Motivation Award for the 12-month competitive cycle ending September 30, 1978. In addition, MIDWAY was the recipient of the Battle Efficiency HE as the best Pacific Fleet carrier for the 18-month period ending December 31, 1978. In 1979, MIDWAY returned to the Indian Ocean and made two cruises there in over a year. The first one was in April in keeping with the U.S. Government policy of maintaining a highly visible presence in the area. This 'Cemergencyv cruise earned MIDWAY the U.S. Navy and Marine Corps Expeditionary Medals. Then in Septem- ber, she was back again in the Indian Ocean on routine operations and remained there till February 1980 due to events in the Middle East. During this cruise, she set a record of 91 days of continuous operations at sea. Most recently Midway has just completed another deployment to the Indian Ocean that commenced on July 15, 1980 and terminated on November 26, 1980 upon her arrival in Yokosuka, Japan. As a permanent unit of the U.S. SEVENTH Fleet, MIDWAY is maintained in a high state of readiness and material condition. With a modern air wing and planned incremental modernization MIDWAY is expected to operate into the l990,s, when she will truly be one of a kind, and always, first of a kind. 5 ......,.... --. -- Y.,...,.q,.,.,....v,p---,v-4-P,-rv..-. ff-.w--f--if-v V '-w-- - 4'-1' ' f ' COMM DI G OFFICER CAPTAI 'E'I M C RMICH EL Captain E Inman CARMICHAEL, a native of Macon, Georgia, attended Georgia Tech University prior to entering the Navy in January 1955. While other carriers behind us lag, The t'Mighty Midway waves the flag. So off we sail on the ocean blue, A trusty ship and a salty crew. Now inport for an ice cold beer, A bit of refreshment and relaxing cheer. But trouble is brewing in far off lands, The fun is over inform all hands. The Midway is chosen to answer the call, The reason is clear, we're the best of all. So weigh the anchor and off we sail. The world is relaxed, the Midway won't fail. Now is the waiting for something to break, America's honor is at stake. For days upon end we sit and we wonder, Will those people retract their blunder. The other carriers relax, inport as they rest, There's comfort in knowing we'll answer the There is no rest for the big FORTY-ONE. We do the work and they do the fun. Obviously it takes many departments to enable a 4000 plus man floating city to function as an offensivefdefensive military airfield, but the Air Department has the final responsibility in this team effort. To do this the Air Department is organized into five major divisions each having an important mission and a big responsibility to ensure the departmenfs, and ultimately the carrier's, success. A ,H it vi! L V-5 Division personnel perform the administrative Am 'oss X functions of Air Department. In addition, V-5 provides i ,i - 1 phone talkers for Primary Flight Control tower, where the Air Boss and his assistants monitor the entire flight deck evolution, keeping track via complex communica tions network of every aircraft and its crew both on the ship and while in the air. p Q13 tl ' ff' M M tix Front Row L to R: AA Lavery, AA Lombard Middle Row L to R: AA Burton, AN Kane Back Row L to R: CDR Poole Air Officer, CDR Park Assistant Air Officer ff Psflill ll H Y L to R: YNSA Stevenson, Jerry L., AN Lucero, Raymond, ABHI Andreus, William C., YN3 Kaufman, Gorden A 39 qu- w1ww,, -fl H MM-Mui Yvmgimhmv-sgnivwnt,-G-,,,,i 9 U' Af- Front Row L to R: Shaw, Montoya, Srephen J., Carling, Richard C., Bayson, Barry D., Dotson, Kennth D., Back Row L to R: Rios, Juan., Parker, Erwin J., White, Robert H., Mayberry, Kevin L., Stubbs, Kenneth E., .W -Q.. vii Il if? They accomplish this by taxi- ing Cprecision hand signals to pilot- in-command of the multi-million dollar aircraftj or by towing fthe fine art of Hjockeyingw the aircraft into position with a tractorl. The tow tractors have the additional capability of starting the aircraft with high pressure air, and are re- ferred to as Hhuffersw. The Crash and Salvage Team is always first on the scene with help, whether it is a minor fuel spill or a major aircraft accident requiring the use of tilly Ca giant aircraft lifting cranel. The 4'Magics, although they represent an almost total turn-over from last year's squad, have compiled an impressive 32-l4 recordg but more importantly, they have achieved a degree of consistency which is unmatched by rival teams. Coach Gilkey, who has a 93-24 Win-loss record in four years with the team, sums up the team's philosophy. c'We play hard, and practice even harder. Furthermore, this group plays as a team No one man's ego takes precedent, no one individual puts themselves above the team. Basketball is a team game, and we do everything together as a team. The largest simple mission, secondary in importance only to early warning, is that of Combat Air Patrol CCAPJ control. Other vital missions include strike control for attack aircraft, surface surveillance coordination, search and rescue coordination, communications relay, control of missile firing exercises, and a multitude of other missions that demand extensive command and control. The E-2B Hawkeye, one of the largest aircraft aboard USS Midway, is easily recognized by its large retractable rotodome, and the four vertical stabilizers, or tails. The Hawkeye carries a crew of five: a pilot, co-pilot, combat information center officer, air control officer, and enlisted flight technician. From the per- sonnel who work on the aircraft, to the men who fly and operate them, the VAW-l 15 Liberty Bellsn commanded by CDR George E, Huxhold are a highly qualified team dedicated to one end: Service to the Fleet. 94 lfne 'W .,,...- 1 s X, avg' gl -I - 1 ,f , '27 e.:.,:.'.1.:ai.:,L.:uaQ i'T7.l'l.1g.,,,, ' A ' I Z. The first thing, you might notice upon arrival at Kobo are kids, little and big kids from age two to sixteen, boys and girls. They simply drop what they are doing and gather to greet their company. Eyes light up with excitement, playfulness and happy expectation, and you are the center of attraction. The kids speak Japanese and you don't - so what! Piggyback rides, ball tosses, tickles, warm smiles are understood in any lnaguage. If you wanted to know what a word meant, you could ask Esther, the very gracious and beautiful assistant directo- ress. By the time you are ready to say good bye for the ,, 'if I32 day, Esther might gather all the children together to sing a song to bless you on your way. Un your way home, happily exhausted, it occurs to you that not only have you given of your time and talent, but these children have given something of themselves to you. They were happy for your company. They look for- ward to your next visit. 1980 EVENTS: On February 27 Captain and Mrs. Carmichael hosted a special luncheon for Kobo Representatives Miss Esther Hasegawa and her sister Hitomi, Captain Carmichael presented the Crewis l979 '4Christmas Gift of S8,000. Jeffers, CO TACTICAL ELECTRONIC WARFARE SQUADRON ONE THREE SIX joined USS Midway and Carrier Air Wing Five in March of 1980. Flying their four EA-6B Prowler aircraft across the Pacific Ocean from NAS Whidbey Island, the Gauntlets became the Navy's first permanently forward deployed Prowler squadron. The EA-6B is a tactical jet electronic counter-measures platform. The Prowler provides carrier strike aircraft and the fleet with electronic jamming protection against the many weapons systems threats of any enemyis modern arsenal. As the worlds most advanced tactical jamming platform, the Gauntlets can tailor their aircraft's weapon sys- tem for any given mission. The Prowler's t'weapon is the ALQ-99 tactical jamming system and its six different jamming pods, whose versatility allows Gauntlet aircrew to confront any threat successfully. Commanding Officer CDR B.N. Jeffers, his 24 officers and the 140 men of VAQ-l36 are proud to be a part ofthe MidwayfCVW-5 team and look forward to the many bright years ahead. .N px! . .X .xxx X I34 Q A gin - -m i ' f if iz .ai . w, ,V , i 'Wm --1 1 H5 ff' Q ' l ,Al ! Purdy Motor Whale Boat Race, they won the Spirit and Saltiness award for their WestPac junk style rig. The men from the USS Blue Ridge, who paddled to the winner's circle in a boat borrowed from the USS White Plains, now hold the trophy held last year by the USS Worden. They are to be found Where ever you look on the ship: in the dimly-lit electronic worlds of CIC and Air-Ops, on the highest masts repairing sensitive antennas, and in the secrecy of briefing rooms. They are the Masters of the crystal ball gadgerty of Metro, and the dark room Magicians of the Photo Lab. They are at home with the most sophisticated equipment in the world. They are, in the aggregate, a dedicated, resourceful, and talented group of professionals. Operations comprises over a dozen different ratings, reflecting the variety of its assigned tasks. The im- portance of their contributions to the ship cannot be over- stated - and by extension, their importance to the security of the Nation they serve, and Peace, is a matter of record. lj d A ,X 77 . 1 1 ' x , ii S-.W Yr .
