Even though the aircraft on the ship are referred to as the ubig guns, the Weapons Department is the group that supplies the close defense of the ship. There are many duties which the de- partment has to carry out. Among them are the manning of the shipls guns, outfitting the ships planes with bombs and missiles, the massive job of underway replenish- ment, the security of the ship fwhich lies in the hands of the Marine detachmentl, and the daily chores of swabbing and buff- ing of the decks. Also included is the main- tenance of tl1e ship's boats, and the watches stood on the bridge and the quarterdeck.
