A mustang can ride alongside a cable car with little embarrassment. A new building can stand near China Town with pride. Perhaps it is a bridge which ties all of these styles together. A sailor is a lonely sort . . . he is a transient, a wanderer, with thepworld as his homeport. Yet, Alameda, a small island tucked away on the east side of San Francisco Bay, and the city of San Francisco itself, have been a sort of home, a place where loved ones live, a joy is spent, a billfold is exhausted.
