Colombo Twenty miles off the southeast coast of India lies the island of Ceylon. Principally iungle, the island looks like a green iewel when approached from the sea, and indeed, iewels are a plentiful commodity on the island. On the morning of January 27, the MIDWAY dropped anchor off Ceylon's principal commercial center, Colombo. Our first encounter with oriental life came when we stepped ashore in Colombo. There were dainty rick- shaws, yellow-robed priests, ox-carts, street vendors selling hand-carved elephants and people of every race and color. Just in Colombo, the inhabitants include Sinhalese, Tamils, Moors, Burghers, Veddahs, Parsees, Afgans, Eurasians, and Europeans. Some of us went inland and discovered the delight- ful mountain community of Kandy, with its tea factories, snake charmers, temples, rice fields and jungle. We tried to be blase as we paid our rupee for an elephant ride and our buddies laughed and snapped our picture. All in all, Ceylon was a treat before we continued our trek across the Indian Ocean to ioin Task Force 77 in the Pacific. mg
