Taormina was once a resort haven of the early Greek and Roman aristocrats. In their path they left a multitude of ancient attractions which today lend charm to the cliffside village. It is still a tourist's haven, but frequented now by the more opulent of the international set. - i Its forte is a reservoir of the most beautiful natural settings in the world: for Taormina is nestled between sharply-rising cliffs which appear to emerge from the mouth of the sea at ninety degree angles. A hazardous road, winding around the rocks in a hair-raising ascent, provides the only access to Taormina's vertical villas and hotelsp pastel structures conforming to the demands of the rugged but bountiful terrain.

i Taranto is a fair-sized, modern city of 'l'l5,000 people situated on the instep of the Italian boot. ltaly's second largest arsenal is located here and the spacious harbor houses the southern anchorage of the Italian fleet. Founded by Sparta in the 7th Century B. C., the city today does not provide too much for the visitor. One sight worth seeing, however, was the castle that overlooks the harbor. This tower of strength was built in 'l49'l and protected the ancient city from the sea- ward approaches. It is now the Italian Naval headquarters. The city itself IS built on a rocky tongue of land and the population is confined to small houses constructed on narrow streets. The harbor of Taranto abounds with all sorts of fish and fishing is the city's main commercial industry. Our stopover in Taranto was a brief one and the inclement weather forced most of us to stay aboard. However, some of us managed to get ashore for a ride in one of the local horse- drawn carrettas as well as for some fine Italian food before we left for Greece.
