Augusta is a thriving fishing village of some 18,000 Pe0Ple and is typical of all Sicilian towns and cities inasmuch U5 the village itself is constricted around its one rallying point, the cathedral. Its excellent harbor has made Augusta Bdy a secondary naval base and one of the main fleet anchorages of the Italian Navy. Augusta does not have too much to offer the visitor, but its environs abound in scenic Wonder. The wealth of rugged, mountainous terrain, domi- nated by immense and snow-capped Mt. Etna, lends classical beauty to the granite-backed ridges and the rocky farmlands which are terraced practically down to the sea. However, Primitive Augusta was only the stepping-stone to some of the more renowned Sicilian localities: Syracuse, Catania and Taormina.
