To most of us Algiers meant the mysterious Casbah. Casbah is Arabic for fortress, but in Algiers it has come to mean the native quarter as well. In any event it was singu- larly free of toney swashbucklers the likes of Charles Boyer, and certainly free of anything remotely resembling Hedy Lamar on her very worst of days - much to the disappoint- ment of most of the crew. Algiers' construction and artistic styling more resembles the Southern European than any other mode The older areas such as the Casbah and the Turkish section are now completely surrounded by modern French quarters which have grown up on the steep slopes overlooking the bay Archntecturally the city appears to have a schizophrenic personality, with the low-roofed angles of the ancient towns giving way to the glass and concrete curves of the modern city. lt is a picturesque city tinged with contrasts: a church and 'a mosque, a camel and a Renault, comparable examples of the old and the new harmoniously existing side by side- The populace is a conglomeration of ethnical cultuI'eS- Turbanned, fezzed, cloaked, pantalooned, beretted and to!!- hatted natives of a dozen different national origins mingle IU the multitude. The major part of the people speak French, in staccato nasal bursts of vowels that awe the unsuspecting but who can forget the street urchlns with their worldly-wlse ways and amazing llngulstlc ability which encompassed flve or six major languages including English 4 fll-FRY' dvi: a .1ll-llil1,r1EEXfElf1l!lRllllffl1'gllfl'lll:ivw':llil!l:3 l 'Vi' ' '
