s the MIDWAY inched into Gibraltar's artifi- cial harbor, we were confronted by the enormous craggy face of the Rock, jutting skyward almost 1,400 feet. The massive Rock domi- nates the seven and one half mile Strait which sepa- rates North Africa from Europe and it makes Gibraltar one of the most strategic bits of land in the world. By its possession, the British are able to control all Mediterranean traffic, and indirectly, to protect their interests throughout the area. Today, Gibraltar is synonomous with strength, reputedly an impregnable castle. An elaborate maze of underground excavation has produced a tunneled fortress capable of withstanding even nuclear attack. We are told that the Rock's de- fendants could maintain and independently sup- port themselves within the Rock for a period of five years, if conditions warranted such action. The first thing a newcomer sees here, once he has removed his gaze from the huge limestone crag itself, is what appears to be a genuine London bobby, complete with helmet, rocking benignly on his feet. He guards the huddled city, which clings to the foot of the Rock. The streets wander and roam about in obedience to the almost vertical ter- rain, weaving into intricate curves. Except for some of the Rock's older buildings, which have charm, the place seems to be modelled nostal- gically after any battleship-grey English Naval town. ' 'lit
