Born May 1, 1957, at the Naval Air Station, North Island, San Diego, Heavy Attack Squadron Eight has flown the same plane, the three-crewmember A3D Skywarrior, since its commissioning. When not deployed on the Midway as part of Carrier Air Group Two, HATRON EIGHT is based at NAS, Whidby Island, Wash. The Hatters have as their primary mission that of all-weather weapons delivery, which they accomplish by a wide range of bombing tactics. No longer a loner on all missions; for instance, the Heavy Eight Skywarriors often team-up with the A4D Skyraiders on Buddy Bombing training msisions in what is a relatively new concept of weapons delivery. The Heavy Eighters, who have flown over 20,000 hours and eight million miles with- out loss of pilot or aircraft, have made three previous deployments to the Far East with the Midway.
