R1 FORWARD Meet J.D. Nunkyard Dawgj! This is his year! J.D. symbol- izes the spirit and pride of Midland High School. He captures our hearts --- a bit naughty, but nice, tough but mellow, digni- fied but cool, a bruiser but not a killer. Once live mascots were banned by UIL, schools began cre- ating mascots to replace the live ones. J.D. was born in 1981 and is a combined effort between the varsity cheerleaders, the art department and the annual staff. He made his debut at the MHS vs. LHS pep rally on Friday, November 13, 1981. A committee selected the name J.D. from those submitted in a school-wide contest sponsored by the annual staff J.D. are the initials of Junkyard Dawg, a term adopted by the 1981-82 varsity football squad. Currently a costume is being designed that will be J.D.'s permanent image. This year's annual is dedicated to J.D., we hope he lives onward in the hearts of all MHS students. Most of us will have changed friends and probably moved to a different town. Our memories of 1982 are recorded in The Catoico. The Annual Staff has tried to cover each event as accurately as possible in this yearbook. Putting a yearbook together may seem like a simple task to some, but it takes a lot of hard work and dedication. I would like to thank all the people who gave up their spare time to help get this publication finished: Mrs. Moore, our advisor, the members of the newspaper staff and faculty who helped us, Mr. Stone who supported us with all our plans, and the business community that supported us by buying ads. A special thanks to the J. William Freemans for the use of their home for the Who's Who pictures. As we close the year, we leave you J.D., our newly adopted school mascot. lt will be fun to watch him grow and become a part of Midland High tradition.
