To the memory of a Man for All Times JACK MASHBl RN S .Icalh niarkt-d ridt „nl ihr- passing of a great man. but the passing of the era in whieh he so enthusiastiralK ' partiripated and guided. He. more than anv other single man. was responsible for the achievements of Midland High School and its stu- dents. He dedicated his entire life to the things that were important to him: Honor, duty and doing what was right. But. most valuable, were his efforts to instill these same high principles in the oung peo- ple in whom he so firmlv believed. It was impossible to be a part of Midland High School without being aware of Jack Mashburn. We all knew him and respected him. He was a patriarchal figure to all .MHS students — leaders and fol- lowers alike. He was firm when he needed to be firm, humorous when humor was in order, and a friend to everv student and teacher. He was simultaneously a symbol of authority and oi .lirness. a quali- ty few school administrators can claim. To those of us who affec- tionately called him ' Daddv Jack. he was more than a Dean: he was more than a symbol; he was a good man. Many of us didn ' t reali - h,tl ,t urcat contribution Jack Mashburn had made until we left hiiili -. Imnl .uiii entered the tumultuous atmo- sphere of college or the (miloMnn.il world. We could look back from a world of confusion to the world and ideas men like Jack Mashburn embodied, and understand what his actions, more than his words, had always stressed: A man has to do what he thinks is right. We never knew him as a voung man; we don ' t know what dreams he had or whether thev came true. If he wanted to be a great teacher, great dean, great man. he was. If he wanted to do what he thought was right, he did. . nd if he wanted to guide and touch the voung peo- ple around him, he did that too. It has been said that all we are is the people who remember us. That is why the happy, dedicated, friendiv man who wa.s such a ital part of our youth lives on in us. We, the thousands of students who listened to him and learned from him. are his greatest achie ement. And the greatest tribute we can pav him is to continue to believe what he believed, to strive to do what is right, to illustrate that the world is a better place because of J. ' VCK M.ASHBl RN. It is. 18
