Rig p i I gf X asain afl?55 We the lowly and forlorn Freshmen embarked upon our furst flight aboard Flagship M H S September 4 1951 flught tume beung scheduled for 8 55 that mornung Presently after the furst realization that we were aloft we settled back un our seats and began to enuoy flyung high Our crew members for thus flught were DON STRINGER furst pulot MARGIE NEILL co pilot BARBARA TOM secretary LIONEL CRISP treasurer WILLIAM BROOKS sergeant atarms and DON EVANS reporter Our ground personnel durung thus flught was composed of MR DON MITCHELL pruncupal MR JACK MASHBURN Dean of Students and MISS HELEN MILEY class sponsor Although we were merely humble fledglungs we dud have a few celebrutues un our mudst They were PAT GREATHOUSE and MIKE LIVINGSTON class favorutes We landed to present a show for the groundlung Sophomores Junuors and Senuors We called our show Freshman Frolucs Taking to the air agaun ummeduately after the show we flew easuly through the rest of the year We reached our funal destination on May 28 1952 When we descended ut was unanimous among us that our furst flught was both wonderful and profutable Our second flught begunnung at 8 55 on September 2 1952 was excutung because by now we were not so forlorn We fastened our seat belts and sat back looking forward to a very smooth flught Our crew for thus year consusted of LIONEL CRISP as head pulot MARGIE NEILL as co pulot MARGIE MILLER as secretary and PENNYE JONES as sergeant at arms The ground supervusors were MR DON MITCHELL principal MR MASHBURN Dean of Students and MISS JANE MOORE class sponsor PENNYE JONES and BUDDY McDONALD headed our celebrutues thus year as Sophomore favorutes We landed safely on May 31 1953 after a very successful flught Our third MHS flught was quute an event' We were funally upperclassmenl We boarded the plane at 8 55 a m September 8 1953 exactly on schedule The furst pilot WILLIAM BROOKS and hus crew members BUDDY McDONALD co pulot JEAN CAR PENTAR secretary and PAUL COLE sergeant at arms came aboard and to took off Dean of Students and MISS JOSEPHINE WEAVER class sponsor kept un touch wuth us as our ground advusors Thus year we had one of Queen Elaines attendants JOAN WHITE escorted by BILL MATTHEWS on board our shup Our other celebrutues were headed by MARGIE NEILL and LIONEL CRISP as Junuor Class favorutes WANDA MURRAY was elected Best All Round Gurl and LIONEL CRISP was Vuce President of the Student Councul In Aprul we landed to give our Senuors a wonderful Junuor and Senuor prom After thus exciting event we flew swuftly through the rest of the trup We touched ground agaun on May 31 1954 and left our Junior flight behund wuth memorues of ut that we would always hold dear September 7 1954 at 8 55 we boarded the M H S Aurlune Convaur Senuor As we took off we realized that un three short years we had come from the lowly and forlorn to the Hugh and Mughtyl It was our last flught and we could hardly belueve ut We chose WILLIAM BROOKS pulot WANDA MURRAY co pilot DEAN CARPENTER secretary and DOTTIE SAND treasurer for our crew to guude us through thus last momentous flight Thus year the Queen was our very own MARGIE NEILL Her attendants were MARGIE HENSLEY JOAN WHITE PAT GREATHOUSE LACY SCHOVASJA BARBARA TOM and MONA LEIGH We dud not even need to land for the Coronatuon as we presented them at the Mulky Way un the Court of Mudnught on February 4th Our other celebrutues were Most Representatuve LARRY ANN BURNSIDE and GERALD MORRIS Most Fruendly DEAN CARPENTER Best AllRound WILLIAM BROOKS and JEAN CARPENTER JANE FALLIN and BUDDY MCDONALD were named as class favorutes AUDREY YOUNG was football sweetheart BUDDY MAYES F H A Beau and LACY SCHOVASJA was named as our band sweetheart The Junuors gave us our long awauted Prom on May 13th which was greatly enuoyed by all of the Senuors Then at last came the long awauted day when we received our wungs un the form of duplomas Our ground assustants consustung of MR JAMES SWANN the new Pruncupal MR MASHBURN Dean of Students and MRS EUGENIA WILSON class SPOVISOV Df0UdlY watched us as we attauned our funal goal on May 31 1955 and We reallled how W0f1deffUl ut was to be Hugh and Mighty but also how sad ut was to leave the SCl'10Ol and the people behund us that we had grown to know so well on our four wonderful flughts durung our stop over un Mudland Hugh School four gloruous years never to be equalled any tume any place I 7 . Wahoo McDaniel set up the first touchdown, fighting his way 26 yards to the Lamesa two, and two plays later Brooks sneaked over for our first touchdown. However, the extra point try failed and Midland trailed 7-6. Halfback Frand Mid- kiff was able to slip behind Lamesa's secondary defense to take Brooks' pass and scamper 60 yards for the game-winning touchdown with only 2:15 left. The final point was no good, thus at final counting the Bulldogs had nudged Lamesa I2-7. MIDLAND 26-CORPUS CHRISTI 7 After Roy Miller of Corpus Christi converted a fumble into a touchdown in the second minute of play, it appeared as though 5,000 Midland fans came out to see the Bulldogs buried. Instead they stayed to marvel as the underdog Purple turned in its most impressive triumph in two seasons, a 26-7 thrashing of the Gulf Coast power. Midland, led by Fullback Wahoo McDaniel and Halfback Tommy Johnson, amassed 362 ground yards. A forward wall fired up by Linebacker Tom Inman and Middle Guard Ken Schrum restrained the Bucs to their own half of the field throughout the game, except for two brief penetrations. Spurred by the outside dashes of Halfback Tommy Johnson, the Bulldogs shoved over two touchdowns to make it convincing in the last half and were denied a third when a handoff in the goal line backfired. LEE WOOD Tackle There were uneasy moments at the beginning, but the final score and even more convincingly, the statistics, left little room for argument in this fray. MIDLAND 26-SAN ANGELO 21 A unorthodox bit of strategy and daring gambles GERALD MORRIS Back were vital factors in MidIand's victory here over San Angelo. The fourth success of the season for the Bulldogs started as though it would be the easiest to date as the alert Bulldogs pushed into a 14-O lead with 1:45 left of the opening period: But San Angelo, proud of its No. 4 ranking in the state, thundered back in the final two periods for 21 points. It wasn't until Brooks found End Hannon with a perfect pass on the five and Bill skipped across the final white line to elevate Midland into a 26-14 lead. In the second period, a 5l-yard Amarillo drive that could have wiped out a precarious 6-O Midland margin was blunted on the eight. The Bulldogs im- mediately took over and pushed 92 yards in 17 plays to take a i2-O intermission edge. It was ball control that gave Midland its first- half margin, Taking the opening kickoff, the Purple chugged 68 yards in I2 tedious plays. McDaniel blasted over right tackle from the two with 6:32 left. The Bulldogs halted a serious Amarillo penetra- tion on the eight early in the second period and set out for the promised land some 92 yards away. It took 17 plays and the ground was yielded grudg- ingly to the Midland 45, but Brooks hit End Jim Owens with an aerial to the Sandie AO to loosen the defense. MIDLAND 28-LUBBOCK T3 Although Midland's Bulldogs weren't the smooth offensive machine they have been in past conflicts while scoring a 28-T3 District 'l-4A win over Lub- bock, the Purple didn't do its reputation as the state's number one ground gaining unit any harm Friday in Memorial Stadium. Halfback Tommy John- son gained 126 yards in 15 shots and unreeled a nifty 61 yard touchdown iaunt of his own. But Lubbock's fast, elusive backs threatened to go all the way on every kickoff and punt return as they confused the defenders with a series of criss-cross reverses and fakes. The Purple scourge, which swept the West Texas plains like a runaway prairie fire in previous dis- trict 1-AA starts, found itself in dire distress as Pampa recovered a fumble to stop a Midland drive Q 4 W, RAY PHILLIPS Back on the Green's 14 and then frantically hustled 82 yards with a short-passing attack. Scoring for Midland were Tommy Johnson, making two, and Gerald Morris tagging one. Buddy Whitley made two points after. BRUCE MONROE RAY SANCHEZ Center Guard MIDLAND 41-BORGER 13 Midland's unbeaten Bulldogs buried a third period thrust under a barrage of second half touchdowns to beat Borger, 41-13, in a District 1-AA game. Outside of a couple of long touchdown thrusts on passes and another aerial bid that failed, Borgei never was in the contest as Midland pounded out touchdown drives varying in length from 23 to 86 yards. Scoring T.D.'s for Midland were Willie Brooks, two, Wahoo McDaniel, three, and Gerald Morris. Buddy Whitley tagged up 5 points after. BUDDY M015 WENDELL TRANTHAM Back Tackle .9 GERALD WATTS Guard ABILENE 28-MIDLAND 14 Abilene, after driving 52 yards with the opening kickoff for a 7-O lead, baffled the Bulldogs with its six-man line and Quarterback Willie Brooks was endeavoring to stage a drive after a previous rebuff. With second and 12 on the Purple 47, Willie went for the long yardage with his first aerial, it boom- eranged into a 14-O lead. BUDDY WHITLEY End JOHNNY BRANSON Guard PRESTON BRIDGEWATER Center LARRY COOPER Back The blunted drive, Midland's first threatening ges- ture, came shortly after as the Bulldogs, with Mc- Daniel racing 13, 18, and 13 yards, slugged 70 yards to the Abilene 8 before the Eagle forwards dug in and fook over on downs. Midland went 67 yards for its first score with a five-play passing attack, but the statistical edge went to Abilene. The final score was Abilene 28-Midland 14. ODESSA 27-MIDLAND O Midland's Bulldogs observed Thanksgiving Day in their traditional fashion-meeting the Odessa Bronchos before 20,000 fans in sun-splashed Broncho Stadium. Odessa drove 47 yards for six points the first time it gained possession and by half-time held a 20-0 lead. With a 20-0 margin, the Bronchos elected to pocket their passing offense until the final pe- riod when they used the airlanes to go 39 yards on four straight completions for their final tally.
