Dear Students In this post-war period most of us spend a great deal of our time discussing the local, state, and national issues of the day. This is well and good, and as it should beg but let us not forget that the world in this atomic age is smaller than it ever has been. We must, then, of necessity be more vitally concerned about our neighbors in other lands, their interests, their desires, their ambitions, and their goals. This is simply an added responsibiliity and does not release us from our indi- vidual responsibility to keep informed of those things nearest us. Only by forming the habit of being deeply interested in all affairs of state can each of you as a citizen of a democracy be prepared to meet the challenge of today. Let us remember that in this free democratic state of ours that it is our per- sonal responsibility to express ourselves at the polls in all issues, and it is also our democratic duty to abide by the decisions of the majority. May I wish for you a full measure of success. Sincerely yours, FRANK MONROE Superintendent 5 ., V . Miss Mary Watson, P. F. Bridgewater. D. W. McDonald, R. W. Hamilton, V. C. Maley, George T. Abell, Mrs. W. H. Gilmore, Frank Monroe, Superintendent. Dear Young People, The present relatively high state of developmcnt of our civilization makes it neces- sary that provisions be made whereby our young people, by a concentrated effort over a relatively short period of time, may acquire at least the essence of the ac- cumulated knowledge of the ages both social and material. If they acquire the proper foundation early in life it will then be possible for them to devote their ma- ture years to perfecting and advancing that civilization. Our public school system is the result of our efforts to provide such facilities. The trustees of the Midland Independent School District are fully cognizant of their responsibility as the elect- ed representatives of the citizenry to provide an adequate plant and a competent teaching staff so that every boy and girl will have the priceless privilege of becom- ing an educated man or woman. The extent to which each one avails himself of the opportunities offered is very largely an individual matter. It is not within our power to educate our boys and girls. We seek to provide the facilities and offer all possible encouragement to the end that they may become, and remain, educated citizens of our country. BOARD OF EDUCATION V. C. Maley, President The Catoico reflects the student life in Midland High School as it actually exists. The class rooms, clubs, sports, pleasures . . . they all go to make Midland High School the school with a spirit. Midland High has completed another highly successful year of operation. Part of the splendid success, I believe, is due to the fact that our faculty and student body are aggressively progressive and constant- ly alert to the needs and desires of youth. It is our purpose to remain alert and aggressive in our operation. CHARLES F. MATHEWS Principal M.- -,.... Hill -I-:xg-,, 'fi-U -... SWEETWATER Our team lost to the Sweetwater Mustangs at Lackey Stadium on October 10th by a score of 19-0. The Mustangs made all three touch- downs in the final quarter, a fumble by Midland and two pass intercep- tions setting up their scores. Mid- land developed a sustained passing attack in the last few minutes of the game and had the ball on Sweet- water's 19-yard line when the final gun sounded. Moncrief, center, played an outstanding defensive game for the Bulldogs. . .ig I .Y MIDLAND VS. ABILENE The Eagles came to Midland on October 24th and defeated our Bulldogs by a 20-0 score. Midland had the better of the first half but were unable to push over a score. However, after the half, the Eagles played like a different team and scored twice in the third quarter, running the first one over and passing for the second score. They scored again with a pass in the last quarter. Midland's Bull- dogs showed lots of drive and fine blocking and if our pass plays had worked bet- ter the score would have been close. Midland ran the single wing and box in the game instead of the T formation. MIDLAND VS. SAN ANGELO 1 A wild offensive football game raged up and down the San Angelo field Friday night, October 31st, and after the rugged battle was over our Bulldogs were on the los- ing end 33-13. Dunny Goode's brilliant 86-yard return of a kick off for a Midland score was the stand out play for the Bulldogs. Our team fought hard all the way and when the final gun sounded we had the ball on the Bob- cat's 14-yard line and were driving for another touchdown. MIDLAND VS. BIG SPRING The Big Spring Steers chilled the Midland Bulldogs on the opening kickoff and went on to win. 20-0. on a wind-swept gridiron at the Big Spring stadium, Friday night. No- vember 14th. Midland's kickoff was to the Big Spring 10 yard line, the ball handed off to another back who raced 90 yards down the side line and over the goal line. Midland was fooled on this play by chasing the wrong person. Big Spring scored again early in the second quarter by intercepting a Bulldog pass in the middle of the field. Our team fought back hard and drove to the 6 yard line and again to the 14 yard line but was unable to put a score over. MIDLAND VS. LAMESA The Midland Bulldogs won their first conference game of the season by down- ing the Lamesa Tornadoes 12-7 Friday, November 23rd at Lackey field on a cold, misty night. Whitson scored the first six points for Midland by intercepting a Lamesa pass on our five yard line and running all the way with the help of a couple of good blocks from his teammates. Our second touchdown was made by Messersmith who broke away around right end and ran 41 yards for the score. There was good de- ception on this play with the ball changing hands four times. The Bulldogs fought hard to take this game and well deserved to win. The Midland High School band and drill squad put on a swell show at half time. MIDLAND VS. ODESSA In the annual Thanksgiving Day - - battle before a large holiday crowd at Fly Field. Odessa. our Bulldogs were defeated by the Odessa Bron- chos 46-O. Midland fought hard but were overpowered in this final game of the season. One drive carried about the length ot' the field to Odessa's 6 yard line. but we were stopped there without a score. afp 1 1' ,f .'
