One Acts Draw Select Crowds MHS Department of Perform-- ing Arts presented two absurd comedies, The Bald Soprano and The American Dream, on January 8 and 9. The Bald Soprano by Eugene lonesco is a verbal comment on the apathy and monotony of English society. As the lights faded, chamber music played on the Moog-synthesizer reverberated through the theater. Then the lights exposed the actors, wearing clown-white make- up, solid black costumes, and white gloves. Themes were man's inability to communicate and his cruelty to his fellow man. The American Dream by Edward Albee is a comedy against the affluent middle class. It deals with Mommy and Daddy's mistreatment of Grandma, the only normal character in the play. Mommy can't wait to have her 86 year old mother carted off by the Van Man. Daddy is a docile character domineered by Mommy. The American Dream is their son, an extremely attractive young, Aman who will do anything for money. tap right Mary hugs the Fire Chief. above Mr. and Mrs. Smith discuss the fact that Mary, their maid, is late. right Mr. and Mrs. Martin, the Smiths' guests, enter when Mary opens the door for them. 30
