-'v E IOR CLASS HISTORY HISTORY OF THE CLASS OF 1961 RELIVED One day in the year of 1961, my mind seemed to wander into my past years and its events, which are now history to many of us. A.s I sat there thinking, I thought of all my high school days at Middleton High School. It seemed only yesterday that 325 students enrolled in the 1958 sophomore class . I remember how full of excitement and suspense we were at the thought of being enrolled in a high school. To our amazement, we finished the first three or four weeks with flying colors. The seniors and juniors quickly accepted us and treated us as if we were their little sisters or brothers. After those weeks, we settled down for a year of studying and pleasure. We quickly became quite popular with our older schoolmates. In that year, Barbara Gilbert, a petite but comely, young lass, won the title of sophomore attendant to Miss Middleton. During the football season, Arthur Fagan, Robert Douglas, and Wesley Gadson were among the members of the traveling football team. Others that were not athletically in- clined, or participated in the band, drill team, or pep squad cheered our team to victory. Although we had fun during our first year at MHS, we strove for and maintained high scholastic averages ...., at least some of us did. As I can re- member, that year surely did pass rather fast, I guess the passing seemed rapid because it was our first year at a senior high school. When September came after a seemingly brief summer vacation, I remember how good it felt to be back within the walls of our school to talk to all of our old friends, since we hadn't seen each other since June. The best feeling came when we thought of the power that we now manifested over the new sophomores. Our most competent class president, Ruby Thompson, led our class to success. Many of our students were enrolled in a foreign language class for the first time. For the first two or three weeks, all one could hear from these students was '1C01'l'l0 S6113-ITI3-? DUTiT1glZ11e homecoming festivities, Ruby Thompsonwas elected as junior attendant to Miss Middleton. From the mid-term to the end of the year, we took tests, tests, and more tests . We took many standardized tests to see how we rated with other students in the nation. On one of the tests fnamely, the CIEP test, Johnny Lovett excelled and accepted an early entrance scholarship to Fisk University. A.s I think, I remember so clearly how all the students Qjuniorsl who had done exceptional work and had maintained high averages during the year- were looking forward to being inducted into the National Honor Society. At the end of the year, twenty juniors were inducted. Those students were Arthur Barb, Carolyn Hall, Charles Myers, Velma Charles, Joy Lawe, Alma Shelton, Evelyn Roberts, Arthenia Joyner, Curtistine May, Carolyn Lee, Barbara Gilbert, Arthur Wilson, Douglass Knox, Robert Douglas, Juanita Adams, Ruby Thompson, Loretta Holland, Johnnye Davis, Alma McNair, and Betty Twiggs. During the same time, all of us were counting the days and making plans for our first high school prom. The gymnasium was beautifully decorated with colorful articles to carry the theme Stairway to the Stars to a fitting conclusion. -..MA AL. ,, .,.........A - L- f ..-.-Af.. , .-4..- .. - ft- 4-1-11-
