The result of that election was 128 votes for and 87 opposed. One room was leased from the elementary school for the use of the high school for S100 annually, and the first teacher, Mr. C.E. Buell, was hired for a salary of S200. The length of the school term was three months. The first three-year high school course of study was introduced in 1890. In Iune of 1903, the town board was ordered to buy a site and build a free High School at a cost not to exceed SB5000. Thirteen years later Industrial Arts courses were added. Increased enrollment made it necessary to begin construction on a new building in 1918. Three acres of land were purchased for S1500 and on May 18 the contract for the new school was awarded for 532,480 Agriculture classes were added to the curriculum in 1941 and the farm shop was constructed the following year. In 1948, parts of the towns of Madison, Spring- field, Berry and Cross Plains and the Village of Cross Plains were annexed to the district. That same year, voters approved a loan of S475,000 for im- proving the present building by remodeling and constructing an addition. An athletic field complete with flood lights was also developed in 1948. Every morning when the clock strikes the hour of nine the students are assem- bled in a large and comodious room which receives light from all sides and is well ventilated. Artificial palms decorate the stage, and a number of large pictures adorn the walls of the room. In the winter months, Ballweg improved a little on cross-country skis, but Moubry regressed. And then there was the major activity . . . EATING! Who can forget those fabulous gummi bears? French Club was really into a lot this year. There was the pic- nic, a la rancaise with cheese, bread, and grape juice. Who can forget the famous ugormet cuisine bake sales, including a new twist of yogurt and bagels? There was a slide show of Tour de Bretagne on bicycles with a side trip to Paris. How about the annual folk festival in Milwaukee? Of course, the lan- guage teachers got disoriented in the crowds. but loyal students came to the rescue. Future plans include a ski trip. Since French Club can't afford the Alps, they'll have to substitute Blackhawk. Moneymaking activities such bake sales, a T-shirt sale, and a candy sale highlighted Spanish Club's year. The money was used for the annual foreign language club Christmas party. Re- member those exciting prizes picked out by the club advisors? There were socks! And flashlights! And socks! Although they had some tense mo- ments, such as the mad race to the Hilldale post office, there were some fascinating extracurricular activities to help maintain the staff's insanity. Ieff provided the staff with his 101 interpretations of Hello Dolly! While, at the same time, the 1979 BELCH-OFF was being held. Food played an important role in the success of the staff's perfor- mance. Meetings usually began with Bill's entrance of I'm hungry. Who's going to get something to eat? and ended with Bonge's trips to McDonald's fwhere the now extinct cherry pie contained an aver- age of three cherriesj or to Ioey's Deli fhome of the infamous re-ap- pearing sausagej. Mona and MI sang their way to fame while Wiggy made her bid for the artist of the year. The photographers managed to endure through Tris' attacks of Suesutteritis and Rob's BIC OFF!! Thursday night orgies in the darkroom provided the well-deserved moments of relaxation for the notorious flashers All in all, the year came to a frezied close as deadline fever spread through the staff. At last report, head honcho Linley was headed for his new resi- dence in Mendota we hope he recovers. 73 AFS Club was involved with many activities. They held their annual pizza sale this fall and raised money for the American Field Students. With the help of willing volunteers, the club was able to create hundreds of delicious pizzas. Also, this fall Mary Lasecki returned home after spending a year in Spain and told the AFS Club about her many experiences abroad. In Ianuary Deb Zingg left for a stay in New Zealand. 74 nl 'I W1 N431 + wi AFS Club. ll. to r.J. BOW 1: A. Lindas, I. Iohnson, A. Arnsten.
