LANGUAGES One of the largest departments on campus, with twenty - two teachers, is the Language Department. Located in the center of the campus, this department occupies one of the school ' s oldest buildings, the Murfree Building. There are six new faculty members on this staff. College graduates with majors in English may become teachers, writers, reporters, editors, radio and tele- vision announcers, or enter many other fields . Those interested in modern foreign languages may choose among French, Spanish, and German. Inmost instances, those courses are taught by staff members who are native of the countries represented by their par- ticular instructional area . CHEMISTRY AND PHYSICS In the past five years, the Chemistry and Physics De- partment has increased from seven to thirteen faculty members, three of whom have been added this year. The department has increased so rapidly as a whole that plans are being made to construct a new building in the near future . The department has initiated a program to permit out- standing students to advance more rapidly . This is in conjunction with the department ' s wish to give the best possible training in chemistry, physics, and pre- professional courses to its two hundred and eighty-seven majors . For the past six years the department has been selected to receive a National Science Foundation grant in order to offer the science teachers of this area the opportunity to participate in a Summer Institute for secondary school teachers of science and mathematics . SPEECH In the fall of 1964 the new Theatre on the MTSC cam- pus will be completed. Seating one thousand students, it should be one of the finest and best equipped educational theatres in the mid-state area . The large stage and or- chestra pit will enable campus Thespians to put their talents into practice as the extended theatre program is planned includes original plays and workshop plays exe- cuted by the students . Debate tournaments in the winter and speech contests in the spring are sponsored by the department, bringing approximately three hundred students each year to the campus .
