BIOLOGY The Department of Biology is one of many rapidly growing departments on campus . The department has recently added a new faculty member and also a new course which affords academically superior students op- portunity to do advanced work in certain fields . There are now one hundred and thirty-two students majoring in Biology . The major objective of the Biology Department involves presenting a sound basic curriculum which should ade- quately prepare students for teaching or graduate work in Biology . The Department of Biology sponsors the Biology Club which has established the George Davis Biology Club Loan Fund . This fund is available to Biology majors planning to enter graduate school. SCHOOL OF ARTS AND SCIENCES The School of Arts and Sciences includes the depart- ments of Biology, Chemistry and Physics, Languages, Mathematics, and Social Sciences. Pre-professional pro- grams are essential part of the five departments found within this school . The general courses required of all candidates for the B.S. and B.A. degrees as well as subject-matter require- ments for either secondary school teaching or for entry into graduate school are found within this school . The director of this school is Dr. Clay Tucker. School Director--Dr. Clay Tucker Fourteen teachers received their masters degree in August, 1963, through the National Science Foundation. 26

CHEMISTRY AND PHYSICS In the past five years, the Chemistry and Physics De- partment has increased from seven to thirteen faculty members, three of whom have been added this year. The department has increased so rapidly as a whole that plans are being made to construct a new building in the near future . The department has initiated a program to permit out- standing students to advance more rapidly . This is in conjunction with the department ' s wish to give the best possible training in chemistry, physics, and pre- professional courses to its two hundred and eighty-seven majors . For the past six years the department has been selected to receive a National Science Foundation grant in order to offer the science teachers of this area the opportunity to participate in a Summer Institute for secondary school teachers of science and mathematics .
