EDITOR ' S NOTE Looking back over the year, I can almost see the steps which were taken in order to bring to you the 1959 Midlander. Steps which meant much planning and many hours of work. We ' ve learned from our experiences and hope that if you do not agree with our product, you will still admire our effort. We did not ascend these steps alone. Always reaching down to help us up were our advisors who were there when needed but forbade us the use of escalators. Therefore I should like to thank Mr. Gene Sloan and Dr. Bealer Smotherman for their advice and counsel, for their patience and tolerance, and for their encouragement and optimism. Even with the help of Mr. Sloan and Dr. Smotherman I could not have achieved my goal. Therefore I should like to express my gratitude to Carol Hanes, Bonnie Hudgens and the other members of my staff who have worked so faithfully and earnestly to bring you, the reader, the 1959 Midlander. DEDICATION When one thinks of Middle Tennessee State College, one man ' s face appears in the mind. This face is the jovial countenance of Mr. Robert Abernathy. Mr. Bob, as he is affectionately called by students, faculty, and alumni, is M. T. S. C. ' s good-natured Director of Field Services and secretary of the Alumni Association. With his ready wit and cheerful disposition he is in great demand as speaker, and he seldom turns down an opportunity to speak. Traveling over the state, he visits high schools and encourages students to choose M. T. S. C. for their college home. He also represents the college at conventions and conferences all over the nation. No one man has done as much as he to help the prestige of M. T. S. C. Bob Abernathy is more than a speaker or a delegate— he is a friend to all the student body. To the shy freshman he ' s a familiar face, and to the secure senior he ' s like one of the family. Everyone who knows him respects him and admires him, the man who is friend to all and helper to many. We the staff should like to dedicate to you, Bob Abernathy, the 1959 Midlander. Page 2

TSC More than the study of languages, sciences, and humanities; more than the social life of the college campus; more than the athletic triumphs; more than the hours of preparation and cramming for exams; and, for many, more than the com- muting—Middle Tennessee State ' s students will remember a conglomeration of people, steel, roads, concrete, land, and brick. They will remember a town. They will remember a spirit— a spirit of progress. They will remember Murfreesboro and a college that never ceased to grow, day by day, during their four years of undergraduate study. For Middle Ten- nessee State College and progress are synonymous. Growth and expansion are a tradition here at Murfreesboro, and the school and town continue to attract the kind of people that began this tradition in 19)1 when Middle Ten- nessee State Normal School first opened its doors to an education conscious state.
