Rubens, B.S., M.A. Aviation Bealer Smotherman and Miller Lan Middle Tennessee State is one of the few colleges in America that offers aviation training with credit from ground school through a commercial or instructors license. Graduates from MTSC are in many fields of aviation, from airport manager to pilots for com- mercial airlines. Local students have pride in main- taining the record of safety which, since 1941, has not recorded a major accident. Miller Lanier has been airport manager for the past 1 1 years. In recent years the college R.O.T.C. flight training program for select cadets has been added to the department ' s program. This year 133 MTSC students did work in some of the courses available. Recognition of the excellence of the college aviation program is evidenced by the fact that Dr. Bealer Smotherman, who took his flight training here, will direct the summer aviation workshop for some 100 Tennessee teachers on the MTSC campus this summer. Home Economics The Home Economics Department progresses under the supervision of Miss Margaret Putman. Girls majoring in Home Economics are ex- posed to new and modern equipment and receive superior training in dress designing, interior decorating, home demonstration work, nutrition, dietetics, textiles, child development, and home furnishings. Living in the modern home living center for one quarter is an attraction to which each of the majors looks forward. Margaret Putman, B.S., M.S. Lucille Estes, B.S., M.A., M.S. Mary Carr Haynie, B.S., M.A. Lyndall McMillan B.S., M.A. len M. Stevens B.S., M.S. Agriculture The purpose of the agriculture department is to offer courses designed to train students interested in teaching agriculture; making a career of practical farming; being employed by the Agricultural Service, Farm and Home Ad- ministration, Soil Conservation Service, and other farm agencies; working for food, feed, seed, fertilizer, and farm equipment companies,- participating more intelligently in the development of higher standards of living in rural areas. Many steps of growth are apparent in this department. It has three build- ings of its own in which are included classrooms, storerooms, offices, a wood-working shop, and a modernly equipped farm metal working and blacksmith shop. A dairy, a poultry unit and various buildings serve as laboratories. Four hundred and seventy-five acres of land are available to this department for the students to experience the actual program of the farm, as well as to earn money to help pay their college expenses. Library A modern, three-level building is the newest pride of the cam- pus. It is the Andrew L. Todd Library and secures a systematic array of more than 64,000 books, periodicals, and news- papers. Along with several reading rooms and an adequate stack area, the building con- tains a projection room, lecture room, faculty lounge, Library Service Department, Regional Library, Tennessee Room, and curriculum laboratory. Miss Virginia Wilkinson, Miss Catherine Clark, Miss Sarah Moore, Mrs. Layde Brown. Regional Library Middle Tennessee State College is the center of one of the re- gional library divisions. It is located in the basement of the college library, but it steps for- ward in offering library services to both urban and rural centers in Tennessee.
