M E d4 K I P H The jostering of respect for the liberties and privileges of citizenship, both in tlie school and in the nation, has always been and shall continue to be the purpose of State Teachers College. From the first tune they ivalk up the front steps to that final day when they walk doxvn for the last tune the students of State Teachers College receive from every activity those character- istics of true Americanism whicli they value above all else, just as the American people prize nothing so much as the principles of their democracy. Therefore let the democratic spirit ring throughout these l)ages as it shall ring throughout the f)ages of the history of the American fieople, and let the MIDLANDER embody and reflect such respect for a great purpose of a great institution. I he spirit of the Associated .Student Body is that of individual responsibility for, and cooperative support of, the ideals that are in harmony with democracy. Now living in a world where democratic principles are constantly trying to be undermined, we are once again confronted with the ultimate consideration as to whether we wish to preserve the principles for which our forefathers fought or continue to e.xist in a remorseful state of complacency. Com- placency, like indifference, is the easiest route that a person may take. This is the chief problem that has confronted us since the beginning of student government. With refusal to participate and help promote interests, this will be an inevitable foe of democratic principles, . ccept your responsibility and work for definite purposes. Here on the campus we probably get our first taste of self-governimnt. and e must accept this responsibility with inlensions of a personal benefit— a benefit which l uilds laiih and respec I lor our fellow men, self-control and reliabilit in ihe ihinss we encounter. STIDEIT BODY Student government presents problems which demand the student himself to arrive at the best solu- tion, and this solution will only materialize when constant effort and hard work have been put forward. The best solution for any problem is for you yourself to accomplish this end by fust a clear analysis, and second by yoiu ' o n iniliati e and determination. .Self-government puis lorih ideals vhich mold personalities with character; get your share, because the world wants men ; ho can do something. Thomas Townes President, A. S. B. The .Associated .Student Body, organized in 1939. includes in its membership all students registered in the college. . year later its constitution was revised to provide for legislative, executive, and judicial blanches which function after the manner of those of oiu ' national s;o ernment. Yes, he was so quiet and unasstimint that many of us had gone about our daily tasks and failed to know intimately one of the richest spirits on the campus. Walter Clifford Patterson, Jr.. was one student at S. T. C. who was liked by all who knew him— faculty, students, everybody. The general concern that was shovvn for his death the loilowing morning speaks for itself. Florals were given bv the student body, arious classes, and individuals, while twenty students rode two hundred miles to attend his funeral. Pal, as we knew him, was a member of the junior class. THE S E 1 S 1 Lady Luck had abandoned the Raiders for sexeral years. The Raiders opened the season with her still against them. No opening game coidd be foimd to replace Jackson ' ille, who dropped football because of the war. Experience was the one element needed for the tough sched- ule to be faced, but it did not come before the toughest was met. With a breather under their belts Western may have been beaten, but Western ])revailed l. )-7. from the start the experienced Kentucky oiuHl had been rated to defeat the S. T. C. com- bine easily. For most of the game the Raiders were heard from and were leading. The feat me of the game Avas the ninety-three-yard riui by William Bostick. The Blue Raiders then were in full swing and turned their eyes tOAvard the vin colimin. Austin Peay was defeated 28-0 with Bain scoring t vice. Davenport and Deere once each. SiNIARTT MClNTlRE The Raider basketball team got going early, slowed do ' vn in the middle, and came back at the close, ending up vith a record of nine wins and nine losses. The records are incomplete, but this year ' s record is the best in many years. The 1940 team won nine games but lost t velve. Considering the lack of experience and the hard schedule, this record is excellent. The team was weakened in midseason by the loss of Doris Smartt and Lloyd McMiulric to the armed forces. This loss was overcome and the team finished strong. The season opened villi a military atmosphere, the 191si Field Artillery team of Camp Forrest being the opponents. They had several stars, biu the team lacked organization. Jackson ille. Alabama, paid us a visit and there followed the roughest game of the year. Both teams looked ragged. M. Smarti got eleven points. Then the journey to Murray and Austin Peay, holding the highly regarded Thoroughbreds for most of the game with I lie guarding of D. Smartt being outstanding. Leaving Murray and going to Clarks- illc, ilie Raiders defeated Austin Peay on a last miniue goal from the center by M. Smartt. Returning home, the Raiders beat Chattanooga. It ' s not often they come away the victors, and this year was no exception. Austin Peay retmned oin- visit and our defeat. In a wild game the Governors were successful in freezing the ball, and the Raiders could not get the needed one point. Brew- ington contributed twelve points to the cause. The journey to the moimtaintop proved to be successful. Sewance being defeated. 1 lien the Delta rose up and smacked the Raiders in a close game to begin a losing streak. The journey toward the land of the Mississippi proved most disastrous. No one was in any condition to play basketball. Memphis, Delta, and Union completely ran a vay from the Raiders. The return home Avas no consolation, because Murray Avas faced, and they had improved since the Raiders journeyed there. The season Avas dra ving to a close. The Raiders needed victories, so they Avent after them. Starting on Memphis, then Sewanee, Chattanooga, and Lipscomb. Lhiion s])()iled the record with a defeat sandwiched between the Sewanee and Chattanooga victories. The season closed -with the victory over Lipscomb. Few doubt that it Avas the best game of the year. A victory at the end of the season makes everything complete. B n E B U L With only four letter men returning from last spring, the Blue Raider baseballers entered upon an eleven- game schetliile. Games were played with Vanderbilt, Maryvillc, Lipscomb, and Tennessee Tech. Opening the season, Vanderbilt was lieaten 5-2, mainly because of Jackson ' s four-hit pitch- ing.
