M. Frazicr At eleven-thirty on a night of iiind and stitrs the end came fur Annie C. M. Frazicr. To the simple and beautiful scri ' ices held in the small church which she and her husband helped build came friends bearing flowers until the entire front of the church was a veritable spring bower. Words arc inadequate with which to express that which is held tight and locked within the confines of the heart. But there are memories of her that are ever and again coming to mind. And these are pleasant monnries: memories of a person who loved life and people and things, a person who made a pleasant game out of the business of living. On a motor trip just a few short weeks before her death, she jokingly called herself the minister of the exchequer because she purchased a nickel bag of candy for the party. 1 remember the lilt in her voice and the eagerness in her face as she ever turned to her husband to make some comment on the passing panorama. And the comment of a schoolmate that they were like a couple of college kids in love and out on a holiday. Memories come of her as she was in her home, the gracious hostess, ever thinking of the comfort of others and making them feci that they ivere welcome and among friends. And again I see her in the schoolroom, employing her brilliant mind and compelling per- sonality for the instruction of youth. She it was ivho, with her husband, helped many a boy and girl over the rough, un- marked road to maturity. It ivould be impossible to estimate the number of unstudied acts of kindness which she did, acts from w uch no return was expected, but which grew out of a love for going among people and doing good. The wind has lain and the stars have become dim nith the rising sun — and life goes on. But the memory and influence of Annie C. M. Frazicr will continue just as ic stars hill come out in the evening. Charlfs Liggett. Honie Economics Fourth Grade TRAINING SCHOOL FACULTY ■-J ' f 2 l Page Tucnty-Four ORGANIZATIONS The Associated Student Body For years progressive students have felt the need for self-government, but little con- centrated action was taken until the night of October 25, when President Charlie Miller called a mass meeting of the student body. At that meeting a unanimous vote was cast for the president to appoint a constitutional committee. His appointments were Kathryn Meadows, Jennie Mae Mitchell, Annie Mary Snell, John Paul Gilbert, John Bragg, and Charles Morton. Working slowly at first because of a lack of precedent, it was three weeks before a tentative draft was ready for presentation. The November 21 issue of the Side-Lines carried that first document. After receiving the approval of the Executive Committee, the document was placed in the hands of Dr. Sims and Mr. Judd, who were asked to repair several loopholes. Then the constitution was ready for its big test before the student body. Its adoption was unanimous. All offices except that of the president were to be filled. Congressmen were elected from the various classes on Tuesday, January 24. Vice-President Kathryn Meadows took office immediately following her election on Tuesday, January 31. That same day congress ratified President Miller ' s appointments of the secretary, the treasurer, the attorney general, and the members of the supreme court. Miracles were not expected of the Associated Student Body. A cooperative setup and a harmonious reign were expected and received. The establishment of the Associated Student Body is without doubt the most important step taken by the students in the history of the college. During his reign at S. T. C. he produced two championship elevens and missed making it three in a row by the margin of one game. Johnny Red has proven him- self to be a true friend to the boys as well as a great coach. The fight and sportsman- ship that he has taught will always be with those who have played under him. Woody Smitherman Woody Smitherman was chosen to assist Coach Floyd for the 1938 season. Smither- man was the quarterback on both championship elevens and was recognized as one of the best backs in the S. I. A. A. His work as coach, especially with the backfield, showed his talent and knowledge of the game. Coach Nooby Freeman Coach O. L. Nooby Freeman has finished his fifth year as freshman coach. He has made excellent records during this time and has proven himself a valuable cog in the development of varsity material. Page Eighty SENIORS J. B. Jabbo ' s calm but ncver-say-dic spirit characterized his four years of gallant play at S. T. C. William (Sandy) Hoffman (Alternate Captain) Aggressiveness, ruggedness, and team spirit made Sandy an outstanding player for four years. His spirit and fight contributed no little part to S. T. C. elevens. Clarence (Shorty) Campbell Beginning his football career while a sophomore at S. T. C, Shorty soon developed into an elusive and high-spirited halfback. Vane Eishly-Onc SENIORS Norman Hasty Little Man Hasty proved himself very valuable by his steady play, his football ability, and his knack for long runs which culminated in touchdowns. William Threlkeld Bill was always in the thick of the fight despite his many injuries. His vicious block- ing paved the way for many Raider touchdowns. Robert Warden Bob ' s willingness, experience, and ability on pass defense made him a valuable man until he was lost during his senior year by a knee injury. Manager Little Page Eighty-Th RuTHtRFORD Charles (Chuck) Miller After playing brilliantly during his sophomore year, Chuck was lost from the squad during his junior year because of a back injury. He again donned his togs as a senior and led the offense of the Raiders as a smashing halfback. CAPTAINS-ELECT Sam (Squat) Smith Squat has been chosen to lead the 193 9 Blue Raiders. His ability as a leader, football prowess, and personality will no doubt make Sam a great captain. Bill (Ugg) McCrory Ruggedness, love of the game, and a fighting spirit personifies Bill ' s play. His pres- ence will be an inspiration to the team, and as alternate captain he will be ready to back the team. Prf.i, ' c Eif biy-Fuur FOOTBALL RESUME After three years of glory, Blue Raider football went into a tailspin in the fall of 1938. Lack of experienced material was mainly responsible. The Raiders lost six games and won two. Defeating the Jacksonville (Alabama) Teachers in the opener, they went down before Murray, T. P. I., and West Tennessee Teachers. Old man weather took steps to hinder this event by spreading a blanket of snow over Mother Earth. Despite chilling wind and slush, many of the activities were carried on. A gigantic parade with the band marching and with numerous comic floats, cheers, and songs on the campus and in the cafeteria, the immense crowd of wel- comed alumni — all these showed the spirit of the day. To the disap- pointment of all, the Blue Raiders took another one on the chin from the T. P. I. Eagles in an ankle-deep snow. Thus an unsuccessful but enjoyable football season ended.
