T. C. Blue Raiders set sail on the 1937 football season Friday night when the Incal crew hoisted an- chor and cruised to a well-earned 20 to 6 victory over the West Tennessee State Teachers Collej e. Just before the hist period closed Murphy, Smithernian. and Hambrick had alternated on a series of plays that placed the ball on the t wo-yard line. At the start of the second quarter Hambrick drove over the line for the first six points of the game and season. Hambrick ' s attempted extra point from placement was wide. .Midway in this same period Woody Smitherman intercepted a Memphis pass on the Tiger ' s 41-yard marker. A pass, Smitherman to Hambrick, placed the ball on the four-yard line from which position Smitherman passed to Murphy for six more points. Hambrick kicked the extra point to make the score 13 to notliing in fa ' or of the Raiders. The timekeeper ' s whistle ended a possible West Tennessee score the first half. Straight plays had proven suc- cessful and helped place the ball on the seven-tard line for the visitors, but the half ended before the - could make a touchdown. .■fier a quiet third quarter with neither team gaining any advantage the Raiders opened the last period in a rush that ended on the one-yard line. Here Memphis took the ball and before giving it up again had marched up field and scored on a pass, Kills to McMackin. McMackin ' s attempted extra point was blocked bv Wasson. The final Raider score came in the latter part of the game when John Hambrick threw a 25-yard pass to Shorty Campbell who rambled the re- maining distance for a six-pointer. Smitherman place-kicked the extra point to finish the scoring for the night. Captain Troop, Hoover, Thompson, and Mclntire were the mainstays in the Raider line in this opening game. Teams Troy, Alabama, October 1, 1937. — On a mud-soaked field and in blowint; rain most of the game the Blue Raiders made it two straight in the conference win column here tonight, when they trounced the Troy, Alabama, Teachers 13 to 0. The weather and conditions of the field made the game a very slow and uninteresting affair, however. During the first quarter straight run- ning pla) ' S and a few passes were tried by Coach Floyd ' s charges with the passing attack being the most success- ful. Smitherman ' s punts against the blowing rain also kept the locals in good positions on the field. Most of the game was played in Troy ' s territory, but numerous fumbles on the part of the Raiders when they were in scoring position made the score much lower than the fans anticipated. The first score came the latter part of the second quarter. A short pass from the twelve-yard line, Smitherman to .Murphy, accounted for the first si.x- pointer. Smitherman ' s try for e.xtra point from placement failed. In the third quarter, another drive was made deep into Troy land and after a series of plays placed the ball on the four-yard line John Hambrick drove over tackle for the second score. Ham- brick also kicked the e.xtra point. During the latter part of this quarter Coaches Floyd and Jackson began sub- stituting freely. In the fourth period the Trojans opened their pass attack, but it netted them nothing. The subs kept the game in Troy ' s territory most of the time with passes and a clicking ground game. Smitherman kept Troy in their own territory practically all evening with his coffin-corner quick kicks. S.T.C. S ' wanips Jack- son, Ala., 27-0 Murfreesboro, Tenn., October S, 1937. — The Blue Raiders annexed their third straight conference win Friday night and amassed against their foe from Jacksonville, ; la., a larger number of points than they have scored in quite some lime. The final score, after every Raider in uniform had played, was 11 to 0. The first touchdown came after Smitherman had intercepted a pass on his own 3.1-yard line and returned it to the 41. On the next play fleet-footed Bubber Murph ' slipped over his right tackle, cut back, and completely outran the .Mabama secondary for 59 yards and the touchdown. Hambrick converted from placement. The second score came in the middle of the second quarter after the Raiders ' defense had stopped the .Mabamians. A long pass, Smitherman to Hambrick, placed the ball on the five-yard line where Hambrick drove the ball over in three line plays. The try for extra point failed. The half ended with the Raiders in possession of the ball on .Alabama ' s ten- ard line. In the third period the Murfreesboro boys got on another scoring spree, mak- ing two touchdowns and two extra points. A short, over-tackle drive by Meachum accounted for one six-pointer, while Shorty Campbell made six more from close range via the over-tackle route. Campbell also accounted for the extra points after both touchdowns. MLRPHV S.VIITHKRM.AN C. The Murra - eleven threatened first after a drive of power placed the ball on the Raider eight-yard line. Jaybird Hamblen broke through to stop a driving Murray back for a 12- -ard loss and end the threat. The Raiders ' move into Murray terri- tory came as a result of a long kick by Smitherman that hit the Thoroughbred safety man and was covered by J. B. Thompson for the Murfreesboro eleven. .• fter advancing the ball to the ten-yard line and with six points on tlieir minds, a fifteen-yard penalty was called against the Raiders to stop the march. In the last part of the third quarter the Raiders led for eleven short plays by a one-point margin. After the Mur- ray men had scored to lead the Raiders by a touchdown, Bubber Murphy gath- ered in a Murray punt and galloped 7() )ards untouched for a touchdown. John Hanibrick place-kicked the extra point perfectly to give the Raiders their short lead. Bubber Murphy duplicated his first down. A touchdown bj- the Eagles in the fading minutes of play gave the Cooke ille ele ' en the tie, but BIrdsong ' s failure to drop-kick, the extra point gave the Raiders the tie. Despite the severe cold, between 2,500 and 3,000 fans watched the Raiders and Kagles battle to their fourth tie in the thirteen games played between these two arch rivals. The Floydmen welcomed the alumni back with a class offense that netted tiiem se ' en points before the) ' lost pos- session of the ball. A variety of plays that sported both passes and fast run- ning attacks netted the touchdown in fine style. Murphy drove over from the four-yard line .to tally the marker, and Hambrick converted from place- ment to bring the total to seven. A blocked kick recovered over the goal by a T. P. I. lineman netted the visitors their first score. Both teams had threatened just a few minutes before but neither could add the necessary pimch. This break for the Overall team put them back in the game as Birdsong drop-kicked the extra point to tie the score. The Raiders were not to be tied long, however, as John Hambrick broke through a good hole in the Tech line, and with shift) ' hip-shaking and plenty of speed, raced unmolested over the goal for a touchdown. His try for the extra point from placentent was wide. With fourteen minutes to play, after an uneventful third quarter, the T. P. I. ele ' en started their dirt) ' work. IVo completed passes placed the ball on the Raider one-yard line. Three plays later Birdsong, who had been doing all the Tech work, slipped around end for the touchdown to tie the score for the second time. His chance to win, how- ever, was missed as an attempted drop- kick went astrav. S.T.C. With a con- sistent ground game that went through the opposing line the subs marched to the one-yard line where S. Smith was chosen to carry it over. A pass, F. Smith to Seay, was good for the extra point. The next two tallies were scored in the third and fourth quarters. Woody Smitherman plunged over left tackle for three yards, after a sustained Raider drive had put the ball at this close range, for the second six-pointer. F. SSON THRKLKELD THOMPSON Pagf Fifty-Five Blue and White Team Beats Strong Delta Eleven 7-0 in Thrilling Battle Murfreesboro, Tenn., November 12, 1937. — A long pass from Woody Smith- ermaii to Jaybird Hamblen near tlie middle of the second quarter this after- noon accounted for the first six points of a 7 to ictory for tlie Blue Raiders over a powerful Delta State Teachers eleven. The Raiders, playing as fine a brand of football as has been witnessed by Murfreesboro customers since the his- toric defeat of Murray, Kentucky, here last year, came into possession of the ball when Yates broke through the Clinton, Mississippi, line and blocked a Delta punt. With the ball on the Delta 26-yard line, quarterback Smitherman faded back and tossed the ball far down to the goal, where Hamblen took it from the air and stepped over the zero-marker for six points. John Hambrick set his talented toe under the ball to send it between the goal posts for the extra point. The visiting eleven threatened three times during the first half of the game. The first march to the glory land was stopped by a fumble on the twelve- yard marker. The Raider line could not be passed on the other two Delta trips into dangerous territory as they held for downs on the eight- ard marker two consecutive times. The third quarter was uneventful as neither team could make any substantial gains. In the fourth period Delta State took the ball on their own three-yard line where they liad stopped a Raider drive, and on four plays had carried the pig- skin to the Raider eighteen. Seay in- tercepted a pass on the fifth play to end the score-bent drive. Fighting hard throughout the entire four periods, both Delta and the Raiders presented an excellent exhibition of of- fensive and defensive football. The S. T. C defense seemed much improved, if judging is to come from the number of shoestring tackles that brought tragic ends to Clinton ' s attempted runs, some of which succeeded for long gains. This was the worst defeat of either team since 1929 when the two clubs started the Turkey-day game. A crowd of three thousand people watched a thrilling game with the T. P. Three of the seniors accounted for the second score which came midway in the second quarter. Hambrick, standing on the T. P. 1. fifteen, passed to Smith- erman on the nine. One of the main reasons for the low average was due to the fast competition the Raiders were in during the season. David Lipscomb, Murray. Tennessee Tech, and Union were four of the teams on the Raider ' s schedule and each of these schools boasted the best combina- tions in the history of their athletic programs and they showed their prow- ess as each of them tromped the Raider hardwoodites twice during the season.
