C. scenes, friends, and activities. We hope that these still-hfe representations will serve as a sketch on which your memory will paint, in the colors of experiences and relationships, the complete pic- ture of your school life. • When the present becomes re- mote, and your fervor and aspira- tions have been reduced to placidity by age or disillusionment, if you chance to turn the pages of this volume and remember the happy days when many of your hopes and ideals were formed; then we have not failed. As a class, we appreciate him fot his sincere interest in our various projects and for his wise counsel, in our difficulties. As Tennesseans, we esteem him for his continued and laborious efforts in the betterment of the State ' s governmental and social conditions. As students, we respect the things for which he stands. We have begun to understand the complexities of the problems that confront us and to believe that their solution is not impossible. One man cannot step into another ' s place and proceed exactly as the former, so by nature the task was great. However, by his efficiency and stickability he has done the iob well. Friendly, likable, fun-loving. Coach VC ' aller has already won for himself a place in the hearts of his boys and the entire student body. ' We wish for him the success of a genius and that his teams in the future may make enviable records lo hang up in his praise. Dick, one of the smartest athletes and one of the most diligent workers ever to attend S. T. C, was awarded the job of moulding the athletic interests and skills for all the boys who wished to become athletes, as soon as they entered the college. Exceptionally well has he performed his duties. May he reach the peak of success is our sincerest wish. Middleton. a voluntary assistant in football in ' 34, was a star on the 193 2 team of University of Tennessee playing the role of fullback. A hefty, sturdy bulk of fire and determination, he has proven himself worthy of great praise in our midst. He boasts the record of never having played in a game of football when his team came out on the small end of the score, and he played four years in high school in Connecticut and two years with U. T. There arc prospects of his being appointed assistant to Coach Waller for the coming year, and all the boys, and those others who know Al, know that no better selection could be made. ■Pafif 4 ' ) MIDLANDER 1934 FOOTBALL INDIVIDUALS CAPTAIN BROWNLOW SHARPE Rrowiiii. ' hails from Mt. Pleasant, Tennessee. Altlnmsli in the first play of the first college game he ever played some opponent was rude enough to kick him in the head, making him lose his helmet, he turned out to be one of the best of linemen and an efficient leader in his senior year. He always took his football sly. SMARTT PARIS Smartt was a dependable cog on both offense and defense. Many are the times that he has made the opposition suffer from his powerful tackles and blocks. He has finished his job of four years of varsity com- petition NLigna cum laudc. CLINTON WARPEE CHARLES The big Injun from Greenbrier — a valuable man on defense and offense alike. Although he did drop a pass over the goal line in a game which ended to 0, he was always in there fightin ' ! Warp has wound up his string of football service .ind he will be missed in years to come. GRAY SANDS Gray, a victim of a bad knee, will be here one more season, and when a few yards are needed for that olc first down, just hope that Gray gets the ball. As well as playing hard and getting his men in the game, he gets his (wo) men elsewhere. But on the grid, they trouble him not. RED OWEN The punt returner and end circler is plenty fast and durable. He has another year of service to render, and here ' s predicting his greatest, although he has already done some wonderful things for the S. T. C.ians when they needed a touchdown to win. C, 7; Union, 0. ■page 5 - MIDLANDER 1934 FOOTBALL INDIVIDUALS GEORGE SHARPE George, the big brother of Brownlow, stands out in the line play in all games. He is a near two hundred pounder and handles that center position like Sher- man handled Georgia. Nc. t year sees George in hi-, final year. Much is expected of him, too. WIN MOORE V, in played three ye.irs and went to West Point, but returned iliis year to fill his old shoes of gaining the ground and scoring the points. Although handi- capped most of the year by injury, Win was always dangerous when he had the ball. Win, too, leaves us this year. TOM BRANDON A bulwark in the line was Tom, and he played his football with sincerity. Tom had a hard time get- ting things arranged to be eligible, but when he diJ, he was well fitted for the tasks assigned him. RUCK EDWARDS Two hundred and twenty pounds of dynamite! ' h. Buck throws his headgear out to the sideline, son opponent is in for a tough lime. Buck has one mo year, and we are counting on him. We are sure he come through with his part O. K. JOE WALLACE The only married man on the squad has one mor. year to handle the right end of things for the Blu. and White, and when we say right end, we als. say he does It right. On offense, Joe can snag thosi passes, and if nobody will bother he ' ll run. Taxc 5 THE MIDLANDER 1934 BURRHEAD SIMMONS Burrhead, the toughest member of the squad, or of any other squad, so he says, is only a Soph, but he cavorts about on the gridiron Hkc a veteran. And does he have his females lined up? Simmons, as he calls himself, may be counted upon for his part. JOHN HOOVER The curly-haired blond from down Smyrna way is another of the crop of Sophs. He is a back with plenty of speed, and if he doesn ' t come through and become one of the best backs out there next year, we ' re all badly fooled. He, too, has a liking for the fair sex and can ' t keep away from them. CLAYTON FOSTER Handicapped by injuries most all season, Foster showed that he would be counted among the Sophs to step in and help fill the vacancies made by gradu- ation. Weighing one hundred ninety pounds, fast, a good kicker, passer, and runner, he should become one of the best S. T. C. has seen. Oh, yes; don ' t forget the bright side of his college life, although she is a brunette. CHARLES SARVER The lineman converted into a back that proved the best change of the season. With power, speed, and skill, Sarver has mingled plenty of the old intestinal fortitude, so in the close-ups watch for Sarver, hc ' il be hittin ' somebody, and plenty hard. BILL OVERBY Bill came to us from Austin Peay and made a very valuable cog in the forward wall. He is expected to help carry the burden of the forwards next year, a iob he can do full well. Some of these were over opposition which beat them in the first of the two-game series. Captain Butch Young, playing his final season, presented on every occasion a stellar type of basketball. His average for the season was ne; leg, handled the ball as well i great amount of service, he i the floor, Norton is a regular to Jimmie, who has friends o comes in on the basketball as goal of the opponents. Bill I has finished his college career, his part, joe Wallace comes in fifteen games. Jim Norton, a boy who has a lame Lapchick or any of the others.
