Frank Albert Faulkiriberry November 27, 1888-May 13, 1933 JUST as this book is going to the press, we pause with bared head and grief-laden heart to pay humble tribute to the memory of our good friend and fellow worker, Frank Faulkinberry, whom, only yes- terday we laid to rest. Shocked beyond measure was his host of friends by the tragedy of a death to which he seems to have been driven by brooding over the approaching calamity of broken health and failing strength. And indeed it is diffi- cult to conceive of this one, so filled with life and vigor and virility, as ever being shorn of that strength upon which so many had leaned and by which so many were strengthened and upheld. I think of him now in the bouyant beauty of his strength, the fine optimism of his spirit, the unselfish devotion of his nature, the compassionate greatness of his heart — for Master Great Heart, he as- suredly was. There are certain pictures of him that I shall wish to keep with me always ; his genial kindly face, smiling at me and laughing with me in the col- lege hall; his tall form, as he stood making announcements at chapel in that earnest, happy way he had, or sitting on the bench in the gym, watching with eager eyes and beating heart the progress of the game, or striding across the football field ready to min- ister to an injured player; his zealous earnestness of manner as he spoke from the rostrum of the college with words of fire, calling forth from the hearts of his students idealism and devotion and fineness of spirit, or as he poured out his heart in passionate appeals for righteousness before his class of men, or, bowed in the deep- est humility, he called on the name of his God. His faith in the goodness and mercy of God was childlike, his love for his fellowmen was deep and sincere, his slogan on the ball field was suggestive of hard work, fair play, and a spirit that could not know defeat. Many young men and young women are bowed down in grief, dumb and unutterable, at his sudden departure. Many were close to him ; many loved him. The greatness and noble- ness of his nature called many into the reach of his affections. He cast a great and beneficent shadow, and many there are who were happy to come to its sustaining embrace and to rest in its gracious security. It is not how one comes to birth nor how one suffers death that greatly matters when the final score is counted and the game of life is done. It is rather how one lived and how he has played his part and what he had longed and yearned to do and be. Judged by such a standard, we may pause in our grief to be glad for Frank ' s life, full as it was of simple goodness, fine ideal- ism, rugged strength. He was my sincere friend, my big brother, my fellow ideal- ist. I believe he has gone, after the bitter and abrupt pain of departure, to the beauty and quiet that lies beyond the stars, to where, beyond these voices, there is peace. — NEAL FRAZIER.
