Middle Tennessee State University LIBRARY f- reiented bu ROBERT ABERNATHY KATHERYN CHAMBERS Editor-in-Chief ROLLIE HOLDEN Business Manager The VISTA of STATE TEACHERS COLLEGE Murfreesboro, Tennessee A joint work of The Graduating CLASS OF 1933 in Cooperation with the Administration of the COLLEGE FOREWORD We have tried to incorporate in this little book the prettiest scenes, the happiest days, and the liveliest activities on our campus. Due to present conditions, we have had to make our book more compact than those of other years. If in this gleaning and arranging, we have been able to give to you the spirit of everyday life on our campus, W2 shall have accomplished our purpose. Page Two THE MID LANDER • 1933 D E D I C A T ION To MR. W. B. JUDD . . . a member of the history department, a graduate of S. T. C, and alumni secretary, who by the simplicity and sincerity of his manner, his liberal expenditure of time, and his untiring efforts, has made possible a close relationship between the first students of the college and those of today; and so has been influential in keeping alive and growing the spirit of S. T. C. this the 1933 MIDLANDER is respectfully dedicated THE MIDLANDER • 1933 S l ' Page Three THE PRESIDENT ' S MESSAGE Attacks recently made upon teacher training Institutions in the state have n ade It more necessary that the friends of education be zealous In the persueing of a constructive program. This institution will live in spite of its enemies. It will steadfastly carry on. Its destiny is high. When so many of Its loyal sons and daughters go out with us to do battle against ignorance and superstition, we cannot falter, or fail. Our spirit today is one of increasing hope i nd sane optimism. . . . Best wishes. Very truly yours, P. A. LYON, President. Page Four THE MIDLANDER I933 THE DEAN ' S MESSAGE Accomplishments that ordinarily would have taken a decade to achieve have been crowded into a day. In the minds of many, 1933 A.D. will stand in history as the close of one era and the beginning of another. You may be fortunate, indeed, in beginning this year a more active participation in the affairs that interest mankind. My wish is that you remember ever childhood, and seek, in all ways possible, to prevent the return of conditions which came very close to destroying what we call modern civilization. N. C. BEASLEY, Dean-Registrar. THE MID LANDER • 1933 Page Five s c E N C E HALL • The newest of the campus buildings, having been com- pleted In the fall of 1931, the Science Hall stands aloof, baring her roof to the sun, and leading the steps of In- quisitive ones Into the way of higher service to mankind. Page Six THE MIDLANDER I933 • This Is the busiest place on the campus. Since Its foun- dation In 1927, there have been very few days when It was not In use from eight o ' clock In the morning until five In the afternoon. It seems that books are truly the pleasantest things In the world. R THE MID LANDER • 1933 Page Seven RUTLEDGE HALL • It takes a heap o ' living in a house to make it home seems to fit The Old Girls ' Dormitory, for it has taken the personality of every girl who has ever lived there and with the aid of years subtly turned all of the laughter and fun into the beautiful, quiet dignity that seems to radiate from it. Paqe Eight THE MIDLANDER I933 • It ' s the merriest spot on the campus from seven in the morning until six in the evening — and why shouldn ' t It be? The hall is pretty — the clatter of dishes comfortable, and the constant hum of voices and laughter brings out the gaiety in all. DINING HALL THE MID LANDER • 1933 Page Nine PRESIDENT ' S RESIDENCE • I he atmosphere of the whole college is caught and mirrored in this home of cordial friendliness and beau- tiful dignity. It gives to the campus a charming grace and a hearty spirit of wel- come. Business Manager Page Fourteen THE MID LANDER • 1933 Frank Albert Faulkiriberry November 27, 1888-May 13, 1933 JUST as this book is going to the press, we pause with bared head and grief-laden heart to pay humble tribute to the memory of our good friend and fellow worker, Frank Faulkinberry, whom, only yes- terday we laid to rest. Shocked beyond measure was his host of friends by the tragedy of a death to which he seems to have been driven by brooding over the approaching calamity of broken health and failing strength. And indeed it is diffi- cult to conceive of this one, so filled with life and vigor and virility, as ever being shorn of that strength upon which so many had leaned and by which so many were strengthened and upheld. I think of him now in the bouyant beauty of his strength, the fine optimism of his spirit, the unselfish devotion of his nature, the compassionate greatness of his heart — for Master Great Heart, he as- suredly was. There are certain pictures of him that I shall wish to keep with me always ; his genial kindly face, smiling at me and laughing with me in the col- lege hall; his tall form, as he stood making announcements at chapel in that earnest, happy way he had, or sitting on the bench in the gym, watching with eager eyes and beating heart the progress of the game, or striding across the football field ready to min- ister to an injured player; his zealous earnestness of manner as he spoke from the rostrum of the college with words of fire, calling forth from the hearts of his students idealism and devotion and fineness of spirit, or as he poured out his heart in passionate appeals for righteousness before his class of men, or, bowed in the deep- est humility, he called on the name of his God. His faith in the goodness and mercy of God was childlike, his love for his fellowmen was deep and sincere, his slogan on the ball field was suggestive of hard work, fair play, and a spirit that could not know defeat. Many young men and young women are bowed down in grief, dumb and unutterable, at his sudden departure. Many were close to him ; many loved him. The greatness and noble- ness of his nature called many into the reach of his affections. He cast a great and beneficent shadow, and many there are who were happy to come to its sustaining embrace and to rest in its gracious security. It is not how one comes to birth nor how one suffers death that greatly matters when the final score is counted and the game of life is done. It is rather how one lived and how he has played his part and what he had longed and yearned to do and be. Judged by such a standard, we may pause in our grief to be glad for Frank ' s life, full as it was of simple goodness, fine ideal- ism, rugged strength. He was my sincere friend, my big brother, my fellow ideal- ist. I believe he has gone, after the bitter and abrupt pain of departure, to the beauty and quiet that lies beyond the stars, to where, beyond these voices, there is peace. — NEAL FRAZIER. MISS E. MAY SAUNDERS Accompanist . . . Director An important part of each year ' s activities are those of the two glee clubs. Since the organization of the first one, several years ago, the membership has grown constantly until now there are two groups. Miss Saunders, the director, has been tireless in her efforts, and it is to her that credit should be given for the present organizations. Long years from now we feel sure that room 41 and the third floor rooms will come to life and testify to the many chords and dischords sounded within their walls. But be it recorded that no activity on the campus is complete, whether it be athletics, dramatics, or music, without some members of the musical organizations participating. The graduation of hiindman, Kerr, hlolt, and hlolden will hurt the team rather severely next year. hHowever Butch Young, who was recognized as one of the outstanding Southern players, will play again next year.
