THE MAKING OF A MAN OF GOD
This term, man of God, occurs often in the
Bible. In particular, there are three men who, in
the full Biblical sense, were men of God. The
ministry of each one provides us with a clue to an
indispensable element in the making of the man
of God.
The first is Paul. Paul wrote in 11 Timothy
3:16,17, all Scripture . . . is profitable for
doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction
in righteousness, that the man of God may be per-
fect, throughly furnished unto all good works.
The first element in the life of the man of God
is the Word of God. It is through the Word of
God, and by the Holy Spirit, that the man of God
is instructed, cleansed, sanctified, guided, ern-
powered and transformed. The true man of God
will be a man of the Scriptures.
The second is Elijah. The quality that marked the life of Elijah was prayer-fervent, constant, effectual
prayer. The Bible says, Elijah was a man subj ect to like passions as we are, and he prayed earnestly that it
might not rain. It was the praying of Elijah that James had in mind when he said, The effectual, fervent
prayer of a righteous man availeth much. The true man of God will also be a man of prayer.
The third is Ezekiel. Ezekiel's ministry was marked by a deep sympathy for those to whom he ministered.
Transported to Babylon, Ezekiel was stunned at the sight of the Jews in captivity: Then I came to them of the
captivity at Telabib . . . and I sat where they sat, and remained there astonished among them seven days.
Ezekiel was deeply moved at the plight of his countrymen. This quality of sympathy is an indispensable quality
in the character and ministry of the man of God. No servant of the Lord will be effective unless he is able to
enter sympathetically into the trials and disappointments and hopes of his people. The true man of God will
also be a man of sympathy.
But it is important to observe also the tense of the participle. It is a continuous present, making, and in-
dicated accurately that the making of the man of God is a process, a process effected by God alone and never
completed until we reach Heaven. Our confidence, however, is this, that He that hath begun a good work in
you will perform it until the day of Jesus Christ. fPhi1. 1 :6.j

He knew He had ore that could stand the test, '
And He wanted the finest gold X
To mold to a crown for the King to wear,
Set with gems of a price untold. '
So He laid our gold in the buming fire,
Though we fain would have said Him Nay,
And He watched the dross that we had not seen,
As it melted and passed away.
And the gold grew brighter and yet more bright
But our eyes were so dim with tears
We saw but the fire--not the Master's hand,
And questioned with anxious fears.
Yet our gold shone out with a richer glow,
And it mirrored a Form above
That bent o'er the fire though unseen by us,
With a look of ineffable love.
Can we think that it pleased His loving heart
To cause us a moment's pain?
Ah, no! but he saw through the present cross
The bliss of eternal gain.
For I know that He watches o'er His own
With a love that is strong and sure,
And His gold shall not suffer a bit more heat
Than is needed to make it pure.

Into a tent where a gypsy boy lay,
Dying alone at the close of the day.
News of salvation we carriedg said he,
Nobody ever has told it to me!
Did He so love me, a poor little boy?
Send unto me the good tidings of joy?
Need I not perish? My hand will he hold?
Nobody ever the story has told!

Bending, we caught the last words
of his breath, Just as he entered
the valley of death: God sent His
Son! Whosoever? said heg Then
I am sure He sent Him for me!
Smiling, he said, as his last sigh
he spent, I am so glad that for
me He was sent! Whispered, while
low sank the sun in the west, Lord
I believeg tell it now to the rest.

Bob Plunk--District Manager
Preferred Risk Mutual Insurance Company offers a tribute to you
who abstain from use of alcoholic beverages. As crusaders for highway
safety and temperance, we welcome the opportunity of giving credit
where credit is due. You merit the praises of all who ride the highways
because highway safety history shows that non-drinking drivers are
safer, more careful drivers, having fewer and less serious accidents.
Only non-drinkers are eligible for Preferred Risk Mutual Insur-
ance. By accepting only these preferred risks our company has
lower claim expense. We pass the savings along to our policyholders,
who receive full auto insurance coverage, plus eight additional protec-
tive benefits, at lower costs.
