Latin hallenge rs THE MOST UNIVERSAL LANGUAGE in the world presents a challenge to the students com- prising the Jackson Junior Classical League spon- sored by Mrs. Mary Denger. Resembling ancient Roman government. mem- bership consists of three somitia of Patricians or advanced Latin students, and two comitia of Plebians or the first year students, Heading the senate are two consuls who pre- side over the four officers from each class. Presi- dents are called tribunes while praetors perform the duties of secretaries. and quaestors who an- ciently collected taxes. but now manage finances. The Aediles are the social chairmen. Replenishing the monies of the state was ac- complished by sponsoring full-length movies of Latin background. An authentic Roman banquet was enacted complete with togas. cushions. and feasting. French Pursuersi HPARLEZ VOUS FRANCAIS? Oui, exclaim members of L,Alliance Francaise. ,lacksonas new- est club sponsored by Mrs. Mary Denger. Composed of three departments, the club has four representatives from each department which form a cabinet headed by a prime minister. Presi- dents preside over each departmentg secretaries keep minutes, and treasurers administer funds. Assiduously supporting their first project. mem- bers completed a language workshop. Utilizing the United States Office of Education's oral Frenchis program. the club found this workshop invaluable. Complete with earphones and tape re- corder the workshop provided the opportunity for practice in diction and pronunciation.
