W Mrs. Isabel Cu ver came to Miami High School in the middle of the year. As Mr. McClain's secretary she is in close contact with all of the students and faculty. In the short time she has been with us she has Won the friend- ship of everyon in the scho l. f7,,5,gi Mr. E. E. McClain is a well known member of the high school faculty. As principal he has done much to create the close feeling of cooperation that exists between the student body, the teachers, and the administration. N 4 I4 ,Q 'Wy W Mr. Ray Cordes teaches typing, is Jr. Varsity basketball coach, and is head track coach. He is also one of the sponsors of the Lettermen's Club. When there is any work to be done any place in the school Mr. Cordes is always there willing to lend a helping hand. If during the year you were pleased by the at- ' the Vandal War tractive art work on posters, 1n Cry, and on announcements, you will be interested to know that the work was inspired by Mrs. Joan Dahl. Being a very good artist herself, she en- couraged and inspired students to express their ideas through art. Mrs. Dahl also taught two English I classes and sponsored the Pan American Club. Miss Ingeborg Fjalstad helps the students solve their problems-that is, their algebra, geometry, and trigonometry problems. The solid grounding she gives her students will do much to make them the engineers, architects, and scientists of to- morrow. awk Miss Gloria Howatt teaches Spanish I, II, and IH. Her classes enjoy the stories of Spain and of Latin America. The excellent movies of these places make the stories seem very real. Miss Howatt sponsors the Con- centrator Club and the Honor Club. REV' 5M . Mt, It is in Social Studies that a pupil should form a standard for his philosophy of living. No one is better suited to teach this class than Mr. Ernest Kivisto with his sense of fair play, his great opti- mism, and his code of ethics. Mr. Kivisto also teaches English I and Economic Geography. He is basketball coach and is one of the sponsors of the Letterman's Club. Mr. John Marschall, a veteran of many genera- tions of Miami High School students, is regarded as an integral part of the school by the admiring student body. His classes in general science, phy- sics, and chemistry are very popular, for no where else does the student find such mental stimulation. Mr. Marschall has long been noted for his dry humor, sly jokes, and gentle ribbing. He is now in his twenty-sixth year at Miami High School. 'r T ' Mrs. Llona Parsons teaches bookkeeping, shorthand, and general math. Her aim in the commercial field is to give such intensive training that the student will be able to hold a desirable position in his chosen field without further training. For those who go on to college the work done in this depart- ment is an aid to success in other fields. Mrs. Parsons is one of the sponsors of the Student Council, and she has guided the members of the council to a good solution for the schoolls problems. She has done much to make the Student Council trips one of the high lights in the school career of those who have been fortunate enough to go with her. . x 5 2 I -We . 9352, if E J. , 1 A new arrival at Miami, High School is Mrs. Ethyln Rolfe formerly of Chandler. Mrs. Rolfe has done much to stir the students' interest in her books and to send them in search of the new and exciting facts with which her library is filled. Her ready smile and her knowledge of her hobby, Geology-she holds a degree in Geology from Northwestern University-has impressed many of her students. He also has charge of the driver training students. Driver training is one of the best liked classes in school. Fair- field scored after a long pass from Valen- tine, and Rodriguez converted. Johnson, Gomez, Salcines, Rodriguez, and T. Guti- errez were the outstanding Vandals. IV OCTOBER 8 Miami-13 Tempe-6 The Vandals, showing the first evidence of team spirit, downed the highly favored Buffaloes 13-6, breaking the latter's four- teen-game winning streak. In the first quarter Salcines tossed to Guglielmo for 30 yards, then went over from the five. Rodriguez failed to convert. In the second half T. Gutierrez grabbed a 10-yarder from Salcines and with Mireles blocking ran 75 yards to score. Rodriguez converted. Tempe scored in the third quarter on a pass, but a determined Miami squad pre- vented further scoring. In the first period Co-Captain Salcines on a spinner Went 15 yards over his own right guard for the first score. In the second quarter a punt by Mireles dribbled into the end zone, and Acevedo dropped the Bulldog safety man for a touchback and two points. The final score came in the fourth quarter when T. Gutierrez circled his own right end for 12 yards. Flash con- verted both extra points. VI OCTOBER 22 Miami-21 Thatcher-18 A hard-pressed Vandal squad, against a spirited Eagle eleven, eked out a meager 21-18 victory. Valentine went over from the 3-yard line for the first score. The second score followed a toss from Salcines to Valentine. Thatcher soon made it 6-7, and then scored twice more. With one minute left to play and the score 14-18, Salcines passed to Mireles for a touch- down, and the game ended, 21-18. Flash converted all three attempts. Setting a new interscholastic scoring record was one of the most outstanding achievements of this year's squad. In breaking the schoo1's previous all time record of successive victories the team chalked up 17 straight in glorious fashion. Besides winning the Eastern Conference title for the sec- ond year in a row, the Miami Hi Vandals became the first team in the history of the district to go undefeated in conference play. An unbelievable average of 70.1 points per game for 16 conference tilts set a new state record for conference scoring. Bobby Davis, a sparkling guard, ended his bril- liant career with an all-conference berth on the tirst team. Tony Gutierrez, named to the 1948 All- State team, made the second all-conference team. He also led the Vandal scorers as well as setting a three-year varsity record of 818 points. Seven seniors will graduate from this fine team, and two more will be unable to participate in next year's games due to a change in the age limit. The seniors include Eddie Miles, Paul Mireles, Benny Salcines, Tony Gutierrez, Mike Guadiana, Bobby Davis, and Richard Fasoules. Manuel Armendariz and Manuel Delgadillo will be over-age. The remainder of the team, Lupe Acevedo, Teddy Lazovich, and Joe Gutierrez have made it plain that they will carry the torch for the departing members. These boys have great possibilities, but Coach Kivisto mourns the loss of the others. Lazovich, Navarro, Mireles, and Gomez had their good days as well as their bad ones in the infield.
