WESTER PACIFIC CRUISE 1983 A June 9, l983fDeeember 12,1983 lt was a gray, showery summer day, the' morning of JuneI9, 1983, when the USS MEYERKORD and her escorts the USS BAGLEY, USS JOHN A. MOORE, USS CA LLAGHAN, USS PYRO and the reeommissioned battleship USS NEW JERSEY left San Diego for a six-monthldeployment to the Western Pacific. The emotion of the crew varied from sorrow, for leaving.l0ved ones and family behind, to excitement and anticipation of the adventure to come. ' ' The transit from San Diego to Pearl Harbor went aswscheduled. The one significant exercise being TGAREM off the coast of Hawaii. Two days were spent in Pearl Hiigrbor with the crew getting some rest and relaxation. and preparing for the transit to Manila, Republic of the Philippines. MEYERKORD arrived in Manila on July 3rd and spent four days before departing for her seeondfmajor exercise, BATTLE WEEK. BATTLE WEEK was conducted with the USS MIDWAY Battle Group and the USS NEW JERSEY -while enroute from Manila to Subic Bay. F7 L ' ' . ' - - The MEYERKORD and her escorts left Subic Bayafterlone day, due to la typhoon approaching the port, and while enroute to Singapore, the crew learned of a change in theirschedule. What had began as a pleasure cruise with MEYERKORD scheduled to visit the ports of Manila, Subic Bay, Singapore, Pattaya Beach, Hong Kong, Pusan, Kobe, Guam, Sasebo and Yokosuka was quickly changed, and she would be heading toward the Indian Ocean to escort the Navy's newest 'and most powerful, nuclear powered aircraft carrier the USS CARL VINSON and her Battle Group. After a four day port visit in Singapore, MEYERKORD, leaving her escorts behind, put to sea on July 20th and would not see port again until September 7th. The next major event in our WESTPAC came early in the moming of July 25th, with the arousal of over l00 officers and crew to begin preparation for their crossing the line ceremony. And later the same day MEYERKORD formally joined with the USS CARL VINSON and her escorts. . The two major exercises MEYERKORD participated in while in the Indian Ocean were -MULTIPLEX and BRIGHTSTAR. While involved in BRIGHTSTAR, in the Gulfof Aden, MEYERKORD was over l0.500 miles from San Diego, its farthest point the entire deployment. A ' September 3, 1983, the crew enjoyed BEER NIGHT , a day when ships at sea for a period of 45 days are granted two cans of beer for each member. MEYERKORD made port on September 7th, when she pulled .into Subic Bay for a one day stop to avoid a typhoon. Underway the following day, the now rusty MEYERKORD was enroute to Sasebo. Japan for a much needed upkeep. With her arrival in Sasebo, September'l2th, MEYERKORD had gone 95 days without any upkeep, over half the entire deployment. ln Sasebo, MEYERKORD met with her fellow Sea Horses , Destroyer Squadron I7, but DESRON I7 soon departed with MEYERKORD continued her upkeep until September 23rd, when she left Sasebo with USS ELLIOT and DESRON 25 for the Sea of Japan to participate in ANNUAL-EX 58G. and exercise combining Japanese and American forces with the primary mission being antisubmarine warfare. After completing ANNUAL-EX, MEYERKORD pointed her bow toward Honk Kong, arriving on the l0th of October. While sitting out a typhoon in Hong Kong harbor, with her liberty secured. MEYERKORD was bestowed yet another surprise. This time she headed north toward the Soviet Union and the site where Korean Arlines flight 007 was shot down by the Russians. M EYERKORD screened U.S. and civilian salvage ships from harassment by Russian ships in addition to surveillance of Soviet salvage efforts. Weather ranged from sleet and snow to warmer days with calm seas. Most of the operation was conducted I5 miles from the Soviet Union coast. with at least 25 Russian ships in the area. MEYERKORD left the salvage area on November 7th enroute to Sasebo for another upkeep period. On November 2lst. MEYERKORD left Sasebo enroute to Yokosuka to meet with her original escorts of DESRON N
