Spring Beer Bust Grande Island, in the middle of Subic Bay, provided a perfect location for a Saturday afternoon cookout. While the hot Philippine sun beat down the crew swam in the clear, warm water of the Bay or relaxed in the shade with beer, hotdogs, and hamburgers. lt was an afternoon devoted to unwinding for we had just completed a month at sea. The spacious greenery precipitated contests of strength and boisterous cheers. With the afternoon over, a relaxed, tired crew caught the liberty launches back to the ship. ,B all 1'-L v 7

ff Crossing the Li no On April 15, 1971 during the transit between Subic Bay and Singapore, Meyerkord crossed the equator and over 200 members of the crew braved the wrath of Neptunus Rex and his Royal Court to undergo the traditional initiation into the Ancient Order of Shellbacks. Preliminaries started twenty-four hours prior to the arrival of the King. Watchstanders were posted in the eyes of the ship, on the ASROC launcher, and on the fantail with a special watch sweeping the horizon from the gun mount. After the arrival of King Neptune the initiation rite was begun. The Polliwogs were first treated to a truly memorable meal and were then brought before the Royal Court to answer and receive proper punishment for all past crimes.
