He received his commission on june 10, 1960 alter complet- ing Officer Candidate School. He served in the USS Los ftngefcs' fCA-1351 and the USS Duncan fDD-S741 prior to his assignment to Vietnam. In luly 1964 he brought his expertise, leadership, and dedication to Southeast Asia. As Senior Naval Advisor to the 23rd River Assault Group of the South Vietnamese Navy, he was involved in transportation and support of South Viet- namese troops in battle. His operations brought him under fire more than thirty times. His radio code name was llornblower , the legendary hero of C. S. Forester's novels. He became somewhat ofa legend himself for his dedication to his men, Vietnamese and American, became renowned throughout the River Assault Group. Lieutenant Meyerkord assumed co-leadership with a Vietnamese Commander of a miniature fleet of shallow draft patrol craft to protect three of the thirteen districts which form the vast delta region of the Mekong River. Historically, this waterborne domain has largely been regulated by feudal warlords and river pirates. The agricultural potential of its fertile rice paddies made it a focal point of the tumult of two decades of political conflict, Here, waterways substituted for roads, lacing the iungles so very familiar to the Viet Cong. ThrealS of ambush and instant death were daily companions to those of the River Assault Group. Lieutenant Meyerkord made many low-level aerial flights in the face of Viet Cong fire to gain vital intelligence data, These achievements brought him the posthumous award ofthe Air Medal. He was esen more daring in liti action with the River Assault Group. ln one action, when the enemy blocked his f1eet, he braved heavt fire to set up .2 shore command post from which he directed artillery and air support to turn imminent defeat into victory. In another action, he toolt over for wounded Vietnamese Commander, though wounded himself and facing heavy fire. He rallied his men and continued the fight until victory was assured. He was twice awarded the Purple Heart for wounds received in action. He lived up to his stated philosophx: ln order to conduct successful operations in this region, it is imperative that American advisors hate an aggressis e, but not reckless attitude. An advisor that is overlv cautious and places needless stumbling blocks in an operation is a handicap, ' Lieutenant Meyerkord was killed on Starch 16. 1965, while his craft vias in the van, leading the River Assault Group up another canal of the Mekong labyrinth. The tire that he drew that das was his last. His extraordinary heroism was recognized by the posthumous award of the Navy Cross. As Truxtun utilized her elaborate electronic tracking equipment to bring US. aircraft back safelv from missions in Southeast Asia, Meyerkord stood by, ready to support her with an ever reads search and rescue and surface gunnerv capability. Meyerkordls duty in the Gull' of Tonlsin was cut short when she was requested to rejoin ASW Group Three in the japanese waters off Yokosuka, to participate in a cooperative exercise with representatives of the japanese Maritime Self Defense Force in the Sea of japan. Transiting along the eastern coast of l-lonshu. the small force turned westward through the Tsugaru Straits north of the island and entered the Sea of japan on Mast 28. During the two week exercise they progressed southward until the conclusion for the june 5 entry into Sasebo, on the island of Kyushu. Meyerkord spent nearly two weeks in the charming japanese port in her final upkeep period prior to her return to the United States. On june 17 she departed Sasebo and, with ASW Group Three, steamed north on a sweep which took her just 200 miles from the Soviet Kamchatka Peninsula, along the Aleutian Island chain to Adak, Alaska, and then south along the west coast of North America for a joyful reunion with families and friends july 5, l97l. u H lhe trip had been the climax of over a year of hard work. On the journey, that hard work was to become a way of life. ln four months the crew had just twenty-four days of liberty. The hours were long and demanding. The demands were continuous, from the heat of the equator to the chill of the Bering Sea. ln four short months illeyerkord had steamed almost 30,000 miles. As Executive Ollicer, my primary job has been to execute the policies of Captain Baldwin and to see those policies turned into practices, procedures, and ultimately, into performance. Your constant striving toward excellence in every endeavor has been a source ol great personal motivation and pride. Your successes stand as mute testimony to your professionalism, cledication and unsellish individual contribution. When I think ol' the Meyerkord it will be these human characteristics and traits which stand out tar and above the material lacilities enclosed in her hull. Weapon's systems accuracy is no exception. Whether off singly, launching our exercise torpedoes and ASROC at consenting submarines or massed with the squadron, gun and missle batteries firing to hit a distant surface target, safety and precision are our goals. While operating in the Indian Ocean in April the squadron engaged in an impressive firepower display, using an abandoned lifeboat as a target. After standing off at ten miles for missle shots by USS john S. McCain KDDG-361, the squadron closed to take the boat under five inch gunfire. After the big guns were silenced Meyerkord moved in to sink the boat with a .50 caliber machine gun. While the hot Philippine sun beat down the crew swam in the clear, warm water of the Bay or relaxed in the shade with beer, hotdogs, and hamburgers. lt was an afternoon devoted to unwinding for we had just completed a month at sea. The spacious greenery precipitated contests of strength and boisterous cheers. With the afternoon over, a relaxed, tired crew caught the liberty launches back to the ship. ,B all 1'-L v 7 ff Crossing the Li no On April 15, 1971 during the transit between Subic Bay and Singapore, Meyerkord crossed the equator and over 200 members of the crew braved the wrath of Neptunus Rex and his Royal Court to undergo the traditional initiation into the Ancient Order of Shellbacks. Preliminaries started twenty-four hours prior to the arrival of the King. Watchstanders were posted in the eyes of the ship, on the ASROC launcher, and on the fantail with a special watch sweeping the horizon from the gun mount. After the arrival of King Neptune the initiation rite was begun. The Polliwogs were first treated to a truly memorable meal and were then brought before the Royal Court to answer and receive proper punishment for all past crimes. Once the Polliwog con- vinced the court of the sincerity of his repentence, he was admitted to the ranks of the trusty and loyal Shellbacks. Q ' 1'3.l'g....... lg, , t f - f ,, ,. Under Wavell, the U.S. Admiral Thomas C. Hart commanded the combined Naval Forcesia Dutch Lieutenant General the ground forces, and a British air Chief Marshal the air forces. Hart's forces were based onthe north coast of java with Port Darwin, Australia T200 miles away, as the nearest supply and support base. I , The japanese, in the mean time, had two powerful attack groups, the Eastern under Vice Admiral Takahashi and the yi Western under Vice Admiral Ozawa, composed of cruisers, destroyers, and transports The aircraft carriers of Admiral rl ,Z Nagumo's Pearl Harbor Striking Force provided mobile air support. They moved relentlessly in a giant pincer through the C South China Sea towards java. Capture of java would ensure their control of the entire Indonesian Archipelago. d The ABDA Forces attempted to offer resistance to the japanese advances but were steadily and irreversibly weakene and pushed backward in each encounter. By February, 1942 only the combined ABDA Navy remained, headed DY Rea' Admiral Karel Doorman of the Netherlands who, for political reasons, had assumed Admiral Hart's position. This f0fCe consisted ol' the heavy cruisers USS Houston and HMS Exeter, light cruisers HMAS Perth HMN5 De Ruyter and IUVU plus - - - , ' ' four American, three Dutch, and three British destroyers. Doorman had resolved to prevent the japanese Invasion Ofl3Va and l I' t so movet tis ships to counter the japanese Eastern Force. He had, however, no time to issue any battle Plan- Hls problems were compounded by the fact that he had no common allied signal plan and, therefore was forced to translate all of his tactical signals from Dutch to English. Though outnumbered upon contacting the japanese in the java Sea, the extreme ranges between the ships made the battl 1 t d fff l f' 1 . le t s an 0 or tie irst several hours. Eventually, after the range had been closed, luck went against him. Doorman S intentions confused his allies and with no easy means of sending clear signals, the force fell into disarray. The japanese then took the initiative damaging the Allied force severely Doorman parried and countered th d irabl before he . D, an , - M e japanesena rn Y welll down Wllll l1'Sfl21SSl1ID, De Ruyter. When the Battle of the java Sea was over, half Doorman's fleet had been IOS!- J 60 t--- -in s ' as Two of the ships which remained, Houston and HMAS Perth. in a last ditch attempt to stop the invasion of java, entered Banten Bay, at the eastern entrance ot Sunda Straits to attack the japanese shipping there. In their attempt they succeeded in sinking one japanese transport and forced the beaching of three others. As they made their escape from the Bay they found a japanese destroyer squadron blocking the Sunda Strait to their left and two heavy cruisers to their right. They chose to make a run through the Straits, hoping to elude the japanese and escape to Australia. The japanese opened fire from both sides, however, and after 31 minutes Perth took a torpeoo in ner forward engine room and went down. G A A All fire was then concentrated on Houston . Five minutes later she took salvo in her atter engine room which burst steam lines and scalded to death the entire engine room force. A torpedo hit forced the gun mounts to local control. Shortly thereafter Houston sank three destroyers and a minesweeper. A shell hit the remaining S-inch turret as powder bags were being loaded, necessitating flooding of the magazines. With Houston out of serviceable S-inch ammunition, the japanese swarmed in for the kill. One hour and seven minutes after the start of the battle, the order was given to abandon ship. Twelve minutes later at 0045 on March l, l942, Houston sank. Those few crewmembers of Houston and Perth who survived the battle were picked up by the japanese. Barely 200 ofa combined crew of i600 surt ived the war. 8 N . Upon the final passage through Sunda Strait on April 24, l97l, Megverkord participated with ASW Lsroup Three in a memorial ceremony for those brave men of Houston and Perth who gave their lives there. The ships of the squadron formed a cross while the crews, dressed in whites, manned the rail, The memorial service was conducted aboard USS Ticonderoga as a wreath was dropped by helicopter into the waters of the Strait. , Q ,M A ,f f wwf, ' ' , .V ., A ,.,f1'g' ROY., 'i I '- 5 I ' I, s' f , ' , Y. 1'f74'1i'ff,:'3!',! .lr 5 , ' 01 V KW: ff: .'
