' W REF U ELI G To steam 52,245 miles requires an enormous amount of fuel. Most of the fuel we consumed during our stay in Westpac was received via underway replenishment. Of the multitude of times the ship was alongside, perhaps the most memorable was an UNREP attempt with the USS MAN ATEE QAO-585 during the ship's transit through the Taiwan Straits in January. Fighting twelve foot seas, in darkness, we attempted to refuel. After a two hour fight with the wind and seas, the mission was decided to be too dangerous and was aborted. The sight of that oiler rolling and pitching violently at what seemed to be an arm's length away is one UNREP that all involved will not forget. ,r f,, . -wfsnnrv' ,, 5
