Boatswain's mate is a term as old as the Navy itself. It dates from the days when there were so called iron men in their wooden ships . Although Navy life has changed greatly in the last century, many hard tasks have remain- ed. These men who make up a group called the deck force perform those tasks. The boatswain's pipe, line, marlinspike, and the chipping hammer are their tools. Throughout the deployment, they maintained the exterior of the ship and they manned the bridge watch. During the deployment, their efforts enabled MEYERKORD to deliver over 3500 rounds on enemy positions with such accuracy that en- duced one spotter, known as Wolfman 15, to praise MEYERKORD as the most accurate naval gunfire ship that he had ever worked with.
