JULY 25. 1972 For all of us that day had different meanings. For many, it meant saying goodby to family, and friends. We departed that day in company with the USS WILTSIE QDD-7165 and the USS LANG KDE-10605 enroute to Subic Bay. Seven months of Westem Pacific duty lay before us. We stopped briefly during our tran- sit at Pearl Harbor, Midway Island, and Guam before arriving on August 16th in Subic Bay, the Republic of the Philippines. We departed only two days later for the first of our many assignments as a SEVENTH Fleet unity Gunline duty in the vicinity of Tam Quan, South Vietnam. Our later assignments were to span the gamut of the duties of the mutual support destroyer. We served as PIRAZ escort in the northern Gulf of Tonkin, on Search and Rescue Station, on YANKEE Station as escort and plane guard for three different aircraft carriers and on the gunline several times again. We visited the ports of Singapore, Hong Kong, Yokosuka, Japan, and, of course, Subic Bay, which we came to know so well. In all our tasks, each ut' us added his part. Because of this combined effort, MEYERKORD performed admirably in every one nf her missions. Many old shipmates were on the pier to wish us well. 5' 1 , ,vw ' . f 49 The fantail wasn't very crowded, many preferred to say goodby at home. - . Q as if 4, 5 I ,fl , I 'v A 1 is , .
